Rajiv leaned on the door frame and looked left toward the setting sun. He had finally submitted to wearing something more suited to the climate than his police uniform and had changed into the ubiquitous white kurta and loose cotton pants that all the male ashramites were wearing. He felt much cooler, less conspicuous, and even relaxed. The security checks were done, and it looked like there was nothing for him or anyone in the ashram to worry about.

The sun was an orange ball in the sky and the sea beneath it looked as if it was liquid gold. He took a deep breath of the ocean air and allowed his eyes to lazily roam the seascape. The silhouettes of several fishing trawlers were just visible near the horizon. Nearer the shore, a local fisherman seated on an inner tube bobbed on the waves as he fed out his net.

Rajiv turned his attention to the beach. A pack of stray dogs wrestled down by the surf, startling a small flock of Sandpipers and sending them into the air. A group of fishermen tended to their boats above the high tide line and a couple sat in the sand while their child played nearby.

Perhaps if Aarthi got some free time, he would take her for a walk along the beach. They had done nothing like that for years. He checked his watch. What was she doing now? He’d tried without success to find her during the afternoon chores, but hadn’t been able to track her down, and he hadn’t wanted to embarrass her by barging in while wearing his uniform. That was another reason he had changed. He missed her.

Even though he worked dreadful hours when he was on duty in Bangalore, not a day went by without seeing her. Apart from the quick phone call when he arrived, and a glimpse in the dining hall, he hadn’t spoken to her since.

He watched a lone figure walking along the edge of the surf. His police mind subconsciously noted the details. A male. Colourful, fashionable clothing. Not someone from the ashram and likely not local. Probably someone from the city. Maybe a local tourist spending the evening by the seaside. Udupi town wasn't far away.

He switched his attention back to the sunset and smiled. It really was a beautiful sight, and it was rare that he was getting the time to see it. He watched the sun sink lower, once again thinking of Aarthi, wishing she was standing here now sharing the experience. But then… she seemed to be loving the program. She had been smiling and laughing in the brief glimpses he had of her. He was happy for her. He checked his watch again. Maybe he would join the evening meditation? He’d see her there.

Rajiv pushed himself away from the doorframe and took one more look at the beach. The lone male was closer now and had made his way up onto the soft sand above the high-water line. His body language and skin colour suggested he was a foreigner.
