Quinn and I approached Healthstone Central Hospital. It looked like a gingerbread house; brown walls with white trim around the windows and a slanted roof, also trimmed in white. It didn’t smell like a gingerbread house, though. Mist melon. Rotten ones. Like the whole place had been slathered in it. Sweet to the point of cloying. I had to breathe through my mouth to make it bearable. Quinn seemed to be having a similar problem, though his sense of smell wasn’t even close to mine.

If what Win said was true, the victim had to be here. We just needed to figure out who and where they were being kept. And how we knew them. Because I could all but guarantee we did.

Quinn looked tense, his nerves strung too tight.

“What’s up, wizard?” He’d been shielding his thoughts since Leo left. “You don’t think Bill did it?”

“What? No. I’m mulling things over. I’m still so angry and hurt, yet I’m pissed off that somebody’s trying to frame him. Do you think it’s him they’re after, or us?”

“We have to assume it’s our clan. That way we take precautions for all of us. Including Zak.”

Quinn nodded. “I’m worried about him. He doesn’t have his magic yet and he doesn’t realize how much your station in the Elder and our clan protect him. He’s an easy target.”

“I wouldn’t worry too much, wizard. With Bill stuck at home, Zak will stay close.”

“Ugh, I can’t wait for him to get over this crush.” Quinn ran a careless hand through his hair, making it stick up. I should probably tell him, but it was too cute, and I liked him disheveled.

As we entered and headed for to the reception desk, I said, “Have you considered, it may be the real deal?”

“He’s seventeen and horny. Bill’s a powerful creature. Even if Zak has deeper feelings, he’s still very young and will find someone who’s a better match for him. Bill’s too wild for what Zak needs.”

Funny to say, since in a relationship Bill was the biggest romantic sap around. However, Quinn made a valid point. Bill wasn’t good for anyone currently—especially himself—and Zak would likely move on. I turned and gave the willowy, middle-aged dryad behind the desk my best sad eyes.

Her face remained stoic, her green leaf-like hair shot through with yellow and her skin just beginning to resemble tree bark. She placed her veiny hands flat on the reception desk and eyed me suspiciously.

“Excuse me, ma’am, I’m hoping you can help me. I have a friend who’s hurt and brought to this hospital. The EBI said someone had attacked them.”

She looked me up and down, unimpressed.

Great.

“You’re the first City Council member who’s stopped by. About time one of you show up.”

Uh . . .

Quinn smiled, covering my lapse. He leaned in, lowered his voice. “Yes, we were just alerted. We’re so upset to hear the news. Which room, and we’ll head down to visit.”

Her stern visage cracked slightly, her eyes warming.

“CCM Candlebloom is in Room 734. She’s such a dear.
