The transport spell drops off me and Alec in what looks like a borderline-cheesy fairground. You’d think it’s a bad idea to finish a transport spell in the middle of a public place. After all, humans know that magic is fading from the world. They’ll shoot a million selfies with anyone who’s suspected of being Magicorum, let alone a celebrity like Alec. So I prep myself for an onslaught of paparazzi.

It doesn’t happen.

The reason why soon becomes clear. Alec dropped us off behind the Cannoli Dessert Nachos truck. The place gives great cover and smells delicious to boot.

Alec pulls out a baseball cap and sunglasses from the many hidden pockets of his sport coat. He pops them both on and throws his arms wide.

“Welcome to Coney Island!” cries Alec. “Ever been here before?”

“Once I almost ran a con at this place, but the mark fell through at the last second.”

“So that’s a no. Allow me to show you around.”

Alec takes my hand and leads me out onto the midway proper. There are tiny huts with impossible games. I’ve read about these—you pay way too much money to win massive stuffed animals that tear open on the car ride home. We also pass a carousel that plays tinkling music. And there are tons more food trucks that smell of sugar and grease. My mouth waters just reading the signs.

My stomach rubles with joy, and it’s not just because of the dining options. As a rule, Alec and I share adventures together. Most of these episodes involve life, death, and some mind-blowing sex. All of which means that the two of us haven’t dated in the traditional sense. Sure, I was a fake intern in Alec’s company for a while, but I don’t really count that as courtship.

Yet today totally counts as a date. There is a destination involved and some fun, selfie-worthy activity. I even wore my cute new sandals which is a total bonus. Everyone knows you have extra powers of attractiveness when you wear something for the first time.

After trying a bunch of bad-for-you foods—my teeth are still buzzing from too much cotton candy—we head over to the main attraction: the Wonder Wheel. The ride’s run by an older woman with a crinkly face and a wide smile. The fact that she’s shaped a lot like a muffin would’ve made me hungry ten minutes ago. Her name tag reads Maisie.

When it’s our turn to board, Maisie gives Alec the once over.

“My Little Le Sweetie!” she cries.

Alec grins. “I wasn’t sure you’d remember me.”

“How could I forget?” asks Maisie. She sets her hand at hip level. “You were this tall when you first rode the Wonder Wheel.” She turns to me. “And who’s this lovely lady?”

Alec pulls me against his side. “Elle.”

Maisie winks. “Is she your happily ever after?”

“Yes.” Alec kisses my cheek. “She’s my everything.”

Maisie pulls the wheel to a halt and opens a carriage. Although the thing sits a bunch of people, Maisie only lets me and Alec inside.
