As soon as Rosaline was released from Romeoâs presence the unease returned. As she walked through the basilica, she observed it was filled with friars and monks. They were not all so busy with the dead as Romeoâs friend. And why did Romeo want to marry her? Was it simply love? She had no dowry to offer him. The thirty ducats from her fatherâs chest would soon be gone. And, she reminded herself, Romeo had possession of those already. Perhaps a wife was easier to order and rule. In Mantua, she would be far from her friends and family â the family who did not want her. She sighed and chided herself. Of course he loved her, and wanted to marry her. Tomorrow was almost here and the delay was not his doing.
Sheâd walked at such a pace that sheâd already reached the doorway leading to her fatherâs house. Rosaline took several breaths and smoothed her hair, adjusted her veil. Daylight faded into dusk. She opened the door to the passage and hurried through. The courtyard at the end was empty. The water pump dripped, cicadas creaked and a nightjar called from an olive tree.
To her relief the hall was similarly deserted and no one saw her climb the stairs to her chamber.
As she readied herself for bed, the door to her room opened and she started with a cry.
âItâs only I. Is your husband here?â asked Caterina in a low voice, glancing about the room.
Rosaline forced a smile. âNo. The friar was delayed.â
Caterina quickly concealed a look of concern and embraced her. âAll will be well.â
As Caterina left her, Rosaline closed her eyes. She would not tell Caterina of her worries. There was someone who would help her without wavering or question.
