Lady Sonia, Rook, Verona, and Adrius were standing close together and separated when they saw us approaching. Lady Sonia came our way, wearing a look of concern.

“Is all well?” she asked Manny. “Other than, of course, your new youthfulness?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “I guess so, all things considered.”

“Good,” Rook said. “Then let us get back to the matter at hand. We must find a way to return to Strong Haven Palace as soon as possible. We were discussing the idea of using the Enbarr.”

“Yeah, that’s right,” I muttered, our conversation from earlier coming back to me, though I had no idea what an Enbarr was. “You had mentioned the Enbarr, and I was about to ask what that was.”

“Enbarr?” Manny asked with a gulp. “Those really tall and really fast horses?”

“Fast horses?” I asked. “You’ve been on one, Uncle Manny?”

“Yeah, I have. Leto summoned them and we made it from his cottage to Strong Haven Palace in hours as opposed to days. Riding them was like being on a high speed train . . . with no windows . . . .”

“The only problem is we do not know how to summon them,” Lady Sonia said.

Adrius tapped his chin. “I have seen others summon Enbarr. Since you have too, Manny, perhaps we can work together on replicating the call.”

“Yeah, sure. We can try.”

“It is settled, then,” Rook said, clapping his hands together. “Adrius and Manny will work on summoning the Enbarr while the rest of us pack up our things.”

Keeping one eye on Manny, I rolled up my sleeping pallet as well as his, not even believing we were the same age. Tucking those aside, I got busy folding our blankets, wondering what I should call him—Uncle Manny or just Manny? Not that his newfound youth changed that he was still my dad’s best friend and my uncle. Or did it? Would he now be my friend? I shuddered, thinking talking to him like a friend would be so weird, and so wrong.

I glanced his way again. He and Adrius were busy whistling. They tried low, then high, and all kinds of different pitches in between. They cupped their hands around their mouths, they even whistled in unison. They laughed, as if having a good time, and I marveled at the magic of it all.

Young Manny . . . such a strange concept.

With mine and Manny’s stuff gathered up, I got busy shoving everything into our bags that hung over the saddle blankets. I stopped and admired the steeds and their beauty. What would happen to them once the Enbarr showed up? If the Enbarr showed up.

Lady Sonia must have sensed my thoughts somehow. “Are you thinking about what will become of these creatures when we leave them?”

“Actually, yeah,” I nodded. “Where will they go?”

Lady Sonia patted the horse’s neck and smiled, giving it a few long strokes. “They know where their home is. They will return there.” She gave me a reassuring smile. “You need not fear.”

Lady Sonia went back to her tasks while I stayed by the horses, watching everything all around me.
