“Lots of usable supplies here,” Silvio says, his rifle still in hand, as he checks out the bags on the horses.

The gunfire frightened them, but we managed to calm them down. Alistair holds two by the reins, while Jac has the other two secured. The young rebel talks quietly to the two horses with him.

Natalie sits with Jett where he took down Patton. Aubrey finishes stitching him up. I hope with the swiftness in which she moved to heal him will keep his leg from becoming infected. An image of Lisa enters my mind – her dying slowly and painfully; those of us helping her actually believing we were giving her a chance. It’s become ingrained in my mind.

Sam’s voice is what surprisingly saves me from my thoughts, “Imagine if I never followed you away from that battlefield back when we were Camp Delta prisoners,” he tells me, clearly proud of himself. “You never would’ve been found. That dude would’ve killed you.” He points at Patton’s corpse. “Didn’t look like the situation was under control.”

I don’t give him the satisfaction of looking at him. Maybe he’ll think I didn’t hear him. Doesn’t he realize if he didn’t blackmail me into letting him escape with me or if we didn’t run into each other on that steam engine, I would have never come this way for Casper?

“How are you?” Silver finally asks me. She’s looking me up and down as if searching me for visible injuries.

“Okay,” I reply. “I lost my Colt.” I shrug. “I don’t think it’ll find its way back this time.”

Silver gives me a knowing look. She probably felt the same way when she had to leave her katana behind to cross the border. A weapon like that isn’t something you can just lose and replace with another. It isn’t the same.

“How did you find us?” I ask. “I thought after the base you were going to Etherwood.” I glance toward Sam, hoping he doesn’t catch my eyes on him and make a snarky comment. “And how’d you run into him? We thought he was dead.”

“That was the plan,” Silver says, pulling something out of her bag. “You told me you would find us.” She hands me a nutrition bar and I take it. “I knew there was a chance you’d find your own way and change your plans, but I also didn’t want to assume. You could’ve gotten into trouble. I had to check.”

“I’m glad you did,” I say. “I’m surprised you got them to come with you. Aubrey especially sounded like she wanted to get to your headquarters right away.”

“Jac,” Silver replies. “If you were in trouble, so was Jac. So, we went to the spot you were supposed to find Casper.”

My eyes drift to the hard, tan ground. “We didn’t find him.”

She must have already guessed that. “I found tracks and was able to follow them to Pirates’ Valley,” she continues. “We didn’t enter and we didn’t have any run ins with pirates there. Sam was there, though.
