Giving gifts to Facebook friends

If you pay attention to reminders about your friends’ birthdays, you may notice small links to give your friends gifts. Facebook Gifts have been around in many forms over the years. Right now, they specialize in making it easy to give your friends real gifts without troubling you with the addressing/mailing/shipping part of the process.

Click the prompts or the Give Gift button on your friend’s Timeline to open the gift shop window. There, you can browse through gift options by type. You can give either

Digital gifts like gift cards that will be delivered via e-mail.

Real gifts, in which case Facebook will take care of contacting your friend for a shipping address.

After you select a gift, you can choose an e-card to accompany delivery, as well as a date on which you’d like to notify your friend. You can also choose for a post to be made to your friend’s Timeline about the gift. When you post a gift to your friend’s Timeline, your mutual friends may see it in their News Feeds.

Gifts are a fun option to have, but don’t feel obligated to give gifts! A Happy Birthday post on someone’s Timeline is often celebration enough. If you were thinking of sending a gift anyhow, though, consider Facebook Gifts a way of doing it more easily.
