Hwa Yung-Gi stepped out of his car two blocks from the meeting point that Charlie Hu had suggested. He watched for other eyes scanning his way, prepared to open fire if one of the Americans sizing him up came anywhere near him. In his suit, regardless of the cheapness of the fabric, he must have made an inviting target.

Turning onto a deserted street, he passed the abandoned building with the sign MacMillan Tool & Die. The standalone construction was hewn from large brown blocks and a sheet of graffiti-smeared metal secured the front door and windows. There was a wide alley down one side, presumably for access to the rear, and a burned-out repair shop connected to the other.

Yung-Gi continued on, barely glancing that way, then took a left along a narrow road to a dusty, makeshift parking lot where Charlie Hu’s gang of scumbags waited.

“Well?” Yung-Gi asked as he approached.

“Benny followed a couple of Triad soldiers here,” Charlie said. “Figured they were doing a deal. But they started hanging around that old metalworks. We held back as ordered, but then a bunch more showed, and we heard gunshots.”

“An execution?”

“Way more. Unless they’re executing a football team.”

“Police?” Yung-Gi asked.

“Not in this neighborhood. Besides, there’s some sorta emergency in the nice district a half-mile that way. Dunno if it’s anything to do with this.”

Yung-Gi nodded, but he was acutely aware that causing trouble could jeopardize his position here.

“Stay sharp and keep watch,” Yung-Gi instructed. “I need to make a call.”

He stepped out of earshot and dialed a number. After a moment, the line connected.

“Mike Mitchell.”

“Mr. Mitchell, this is Hwa Yung-Gi. I have been made aware of an incident involving gunfire in DC, and my sources tell me Triad activity may be to blame. I require an immediate update.”

There was a brief pause before Mike replied, “Once again, I assure you, the situation is being handled. You would have been briefed in due course.”

“That seems to be all I hear, but never any details. Is Hangman involved? Are you apprehending these criminals?”

“We have no intelligence relating to Triad activity. The incident you’re referring to looks like a hoax, but it is being investigated thoroughly. Now please…” Mitchell’s patience seemed to be wearing thin. “I understand your concerns, but I must ask you to focus on your own responsibilities. Perhaps now is the time for you to head to New York. Your presence there will be crucial.”

Yung-Gi closed his eyes, recognizing the polite words as a dismissal. “Very well. Thank you for your candor.”

He ended the call and returned to Charlie.

“If the Triads leave, follow them,” Yung-Gi said. “If any other players show up, alert me immediately. We may need to escalate matters our own way.”

Charlie nodded. “Understood.”

As Yung-Gi returned to his car, he told himself that he was prepared to sacrifice his liberty should it be necessary, and he would absolutely sacrifice Charlie and his friends. It was a dangerous line to cross, but if the Americans wouldn’t share critical information, he had no choice but to act accordingly.
