Chapter 6
âJERRY FOLAND,â he said, answering his telephone at the office without his usual energy. Since the weekend, things had been off. He hadnât felt rightânot that he was sick or anything, but heâd felt strange, like some part of him was either too big or too small, and he couldnât put a finger on it. The last time heâd felt this way, his mother had bought him a pair of pants that were the right size according to the label, but theyâd gripped his legs tightly whenever he sat a certain way. Heâd known something was wrong, but most of the time they were fine. Something like that was going on now, and he didnât know why.
âJerry.â A bright voice came through the line that he didnât recognize. âMy clients have accepted the offer on Felmont.â It took him a minute to make the connection. Maureen and Ericâs place, Marcelloâs friend where theyâd babysat.
âThatâs wonderful.â
âThe paperwork is being sent as we speak, and this looks like a done deal. Let me know when you can arrange the inspection, and once that contingency is cleared, weâll get the home warranty, and everything should be beautiful.â
Jerry was trying to figure out who he was talking to. Obviously the guy thought himself memorable enough that he hadnât introduced himself, which was a little rude, and Jerry scowled as he typed at his computer to bring up who the listing agent was. âGreat, Howard, no problem,â he said when he had the information up and his memory kicked in. âOnly the mortgage remains, and that shouldnât be an issue.â This was all normal stuff. âIâll tell them and weâll get started.â
âAwesome. Talk to you soon.â Howard hung up, and Jerryâs e-mail icon flashed. He brought up the message with the copy of the completed agreement and printed it out. The originals would follow, but this was enough to get things started. He spent a few minutes contacting his buyer to give her the good news and then sat back for a few seconds.
Jerryâs phone sat on the desk, and he turned it over as though it held the answers to his unsettledness. Of course it sat there, largely quiet as it had been for the past few days. Marcello hadnât called. Jerry looked through his history. They hadnât talked since Saturday, after dinner with his mother, when heâd taken Marcello home. He checked for text messages as well, but there was nothing beyond the one from Sunday to thank him for dinner and to say that it had been nice meeting his mother. Other than that, things had been silent between them. Jerry wondered if heâd done something wrong or if Marcello was just busy. Either way, the unsettled feeling persisted, and since he didnât have any appointments, Jerry got up from his desk, shrugged on his coat, and went out through the heavy rain to his car. Whenever things didnât feel right, his recourse was to head to the gym and work it out.
