Chapter 6

“JERRY FOLAND,” he said, answering his telephone at the office without his usual energy. Since the weekend, things had been off. He hadn’t felt right—not that he was sick or anything, but he’d felt strange, like some part of him was either too big or too small, and he couldn’t put a finger on it. The last time he’d felt this way, his mother had bought him a pair of pants that were the right size according to the label, but they’d gripped his legs tightly whenever he sat a certain way. He’d known something was wrong, but most of the time they were fine. Something like that was going on now, and he didn’t know why.

“Jerry.” A bright voice came through the line that he didn’t recognize. “My clients have accepted the offer on Felmont.” It took him a minute to make the connection. Maureen and Eric’s place, Marcello’s friend where they’d babysat.

“That’s wonderful.”

“The paperwork is being sent as we speak, and this looks like a done deal. Let me know when you can arrange the inspection, and once that contingency is cleared, we’ll get the home warranty, and everything should be beautiful.”

Jerry was trying to figure out who he was talking to. Obviously the guy thought himself memorable enough that he hadn’t introduced himself, which was a little rude, and Jerry scowled as he typed at his computer to bring up who the listing agent was. “Great, Howard, no problem,” he said when he had the information up and his memory kicked in. “Only the mortgage remains, and that shouldn’t be an issue.” This was all normal stuff. “I’ll tell them and we’ll get started.”

“Awesome. Talk to you soon.” Howard hung up, and Jerry’s e-mail icon flashed. He brought up the message with the copy of the completed agreement and printed it out. The originals would follow, but this was enough to get things started. He spent a few minutes contacting his buyer to give her the good news and then sat back for a few seconds.

Jerry’s phone sat on the desk, and he turned it over as though it held the answers to his unsettledness. Of course it sat there, largely quiet as it had been for the past few days. Marcello hadn’t called. Jerry looked through his history. They hadn’t talked since Saturday, after dinner with his mother, when he’d taken Marcello home. He checked for text messages as well, but there was nothing beyond the one from Sunday to thank him for dinner and to say that it had been nice meeting his mother. Other than that, things had been silent between them. Jerry wondered if he’d done something wrong or if Marcello was just busy. Either way, the unsettled feeling persisted, and since he didn’t have any appointments, Jerry got up from his desk, shrugged on his coat, and went out through the heavy rain to his car. Whenever things didn’t feel right, his recourse was to head to the gym and work it out.
