As Rosie and Kathryn made their appearance, the hall fell silent as they studied the accused’s every move. Claire wasn’t deterred for even a second. “Well, look who’s decided to grace us with their presence. Is the child not joining you? Or is she far too sick for all this excitement?”

Murmurs began to circle the hall as Rosie fought the urge to throttle Claire. “What is your problem? My niece is sick. She has a run of the mill bug, not this bloody virus. Why are you making this worse than it is?”

“Because we were herded into this place like cattle, we had no choice and we were led to believe that we would be protected from the evils of the outside world for at least seventy-two hours. So far, we’ve had to deal with a druggy, a guy who can’t control his temper and now a sick little girl, not to mention your ‘injured’ sister.”

“What does that mean? ‘Injured’?”

“It means she is paralysed. She’s been bitten and, therefore, she is infected and she might not be able to attack anyone but she can still infect them.”

“How the hell did you figure that one out?” Kathryn stood proudly by Rosie’s side. “The virus isn’t airborne. Where are you getting this information from?”

“And it isn’t a bite,” Rosie argued.

“And we’re supposed to believe that? Just because you say it’s a boot print, doesn’t mean that’s what it is.” Kim stood behind Claire like one of those extras you try not to pay too much attention to in films because they are merely there to make up the numbers.

“Go and look at it. You can’t base your witch hunt for an innocent child and a harmless woman on an assumption of what they might have wrong with them. We’re in no danger, True’s just sick. Can’t you just leave her alone?”

Grace stepped between Kathryn and Kim in an attempt to diffuse the situation. “I think we all need to calm down and focus on the facts.”

She waited until she had everyone’s attention before continuing. "True is sick. We don’t know what she has but in case she is contagious, it’s best that she stays in the office. The harsh truth is that we don’t know if the virus is airborne, but we have to assume it would’ve been made public if it was and True wasn’t bitten.

“And where Vickey is concerned, we still have no idea about the damage she’s suffered. It’s easy to jump to conclusions but at the end of all this, don’t you want to be able to say you held on to your humanity as long as you possibly could? I mean, we’re right at the beginning of things and you’re already considering murder. Not self-defence, murder.”

As if she hadn’t even heard the latter part of Grace’s speech, Claire rolled her eyes. “Of course, we wouldn’t know if it’s airborne. Don’t be so naïve.”

Grace carried on. “We also don’t know when the incubation period is. Chickenpox is contagious through air and contact days before the rash even shows.
