As Rosie and Kathryn made their appearance, the hall fell silent as they studied the accusedâs every move. Claire wasnât deterred for even a second. âWell, look whoâs decided to grace us with their presence. Is the child not joining you? Or is she far too sick for all this excitement?â
Murmurs began to circle the hall as Rosie fought the urge to throttle Claire. âWhat is your problem? My niece is sick. She has a run of the mill bug, not this bloody virus. Why are you making this worse than it is?â
âBecause we were herded into this place like cattle, we had no choice and we were led to believe that we would be protected from the evils of the outside world for at least seventy-two hours. So far, weâve had to deal with a druggy, a guy who canât control his temper and now a sick little girl, not to mention your âinjuredâ sister.â
âWhat does that mean? âInjuredâ?â
âIt means she is paralysed. Sheâs been bitten and, therefore, she is infected and she might not be able to attack anyone but she can still infect them.â
âHow the hell did you figure that one out?â Kathryn stood proudly by Rosieâs side. âThe virus isnât airborne. Where are you getting this information from?â
âAnd it isnât a bite,â Rosie argued.
âAnd weâre supposed to believe that? Just because you say itâs a boot print, doesnât mean thatâs what it is.â Kim stood behind Claire like one of those extras you try not to pay too much attention to in films because they are merely there to make up the numbers.
âGo and look at it. You canât base your witch hunt for an innocent child and a harmless woman on an assumption of what they might have wrong with them. Weâre in no danger, Trueâs just sick. Canât you just leave her alone?â
Grace stepped between Kathryn and Kim in an attempt to diffuse the situation. âI think we all need to calm down and focus on the facts.â
She waited until she had everyoneâs attention before continuing. "True is sick. We donât know what she has but in case she is contagious, itâs best that she stays in the office. The harsh truth is that we donât know if the virus is airborne, but we have to assume it wouldâve been made public if it was and True wasnât bitten.
âAnd where Vickey is concerned, we still have no idea about the damage sheâs suffered. Itâs easy to jump to conclusions but at the end of all this, donât you want to be able to say you held on to your humanity as long as you possibly could? I mean, weâre right at the beginning of things and youâre already considering murder. Not self-defence, murder.â
As if she hadnât even heard the latter part of Graceâs speech, Claire rolled her eyes. âOf course, we wouldnât know if itâs airborne. Donât be so naïve.â
Grace carried on. âWe also donât know when the incubation period is. Chickenpox is contagious through air and contact days before the rash even shows.
