Chapter 24
Re made it back home around four in the morning. He may not have proved his ability to do anything special with the amuletâs power, but at least he could get a few more hours of sleep before school.
He settled down under his comforter, hoping to fall asleep fast when his foot twitched under the blankets. A tiny tickle caused him to move his foot up and down to alleviate the feeling. Then it happened again, but more intense as if there was something, or lots of somethings, crawling over his toes and ankles. What seemed like dozens of tiny legs started making their way up his calves to his knees.
Re sat up quickly and threw back the blankets. Dozens of small black beetles covered his legs and were scurrying towards his thighs.
And they were multiplying.
Re pulled his legs into his chest, knocking off beetles with each movement, then jumped out of his bed away from the swarm of insects. He backed away until he slammed into the wall, trapped in the corner of his bedroom. Hundreds of beetles were crawling from his bed and coming out from all openings in his room. They sped toward him from the windows and door jams, then started dropping from the air vent in the ceiling. They continued to multiply, crawling over each other, becoming a sea of black insects.
Re swatted and kicked at them as his body began to disappear beneath the flood of beetles, sinking like he was in quicksand. His arms and legs were pinned down under the weight of the bugs, and soon, he would be completely buried. He screamed in desperation as they covered his face and swallowed him entirely.
