Matthew rode back to the Mission with a heavy heart, reflecting on how much he owed to Charlie and Alice for his opportunity to become a constable. His thoughts drifted to what he had done since, and he found himself thanking the generous couple also for the opportunity to meet Hannah. He did his best to dismiss that thought, but somehow it wouldn’t be dismissed.

Rebecca was the first out of the guest hut as he hitched Samuel to the rail, and she tutted at his black eye and insisted on leading him to a water barrel, where she took a kerchief from her sleeve and began to bathe the bruising that was threatening to affect his vision. While he was bent backwards in response to her stern instruction to ‘keep still and stop acting like a mimsy,’ the voice he was hoping to hear broke in on their conversation.

‘Did you find the bitch? If you killed her, I’ll blow your balls off.’

Rebecca gave a gasp of horror and turned to face Hannah. ‘That’s no way to speak to my brother — or anyone else for that matter. What if the children heard you?’

Hannah ignored her and spoke to Matthew. ‘How did you get that lovely black eye?’

‘A fight in a bar in Windsor. All in the line of duty, I hasten to add. But tomorrow I have to ride to Maitland. An old friend of mine was killed by what sounds like Phoebe Jackson’s new gang. I now have my own reason for wanting her dead.’

‘You’re not going without me!’ Hannah insisted.

‘I rather think I am,’ Matthew told her, ‘because on my way I need to call in at Macdonald Village. I’m still their constable, in case you’d forgotten, and I don’t suppose for one moment that you want to be seen alive in that vicinity ever again.’

‘I meant what I said,’ Hannah insisted as she turned to go, ‘even if your sister does disapprove of the way I put it.’

‘I’m not so sure I quite like Hannah as much as I did,’ Rebecca admitted as she dabbed once more at Matthew’s bruised eyebrow. ‘She’s been very — well, very short — with me ever since you left this morning, almost as if she resents having told me all about what happened to her.’

‘She’s a very confused lady,’ Matthew explained. ‘She resents having to show weakness to anyone, although I suspect that she just wants to be a normal woman, cradled in the arms of a man who doesn’t treat her brutally. She all but admitted that to me, once.’

‘You could have fooled me,’ Rebecca replied. ‘It makes me shiver, how she keeps those guns by the bed. If Brother Ignatius only knew…’

‘Don’t tell him, whatever you do,’ Matthew interrupted her. ‘We don’t know if — or perhaps when — this mission will come under attack, and then we’ll need all the fire power we can scrape together. Hannah’s a superb shot, but there’s only one of her and I don’t suppose that either of our clerical friends are hiding firearms under their cassocks.
