Vance sat in the rocking chair beneath the veranda, waiting for her. When she turned the corner, she stopped in her tracks.

“Jesus-jimminy-Christ.” She placed her hand on her heart. “What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you. I was beginning to think you were doing a dissertation of War and Peace with Cher’s brother over there. You two looked pretty cozy.”

“Now that you mention it, he does look a little like Cher. If she were a he.” She tilted her head. “Are you jealous?”

“Should I be?”

“I hope so. That’s what you get for spying on me.”

“I wouldn’t call it spying. I would call it politely waiting. If I were spying, I’d know what you two talked about. On that note, what were you talking about?”

She told him about their conversation.

He needed a moment to process it. “Let me get this straight: Roy is partners with the Israelis. Josh works for Roy. Mossad is funding the technology that’s been stolen, and you think that’s why Israeli intelligence agents are staying here? Daryl coincidentally knows an FBI agent who just happened to tell him about a murder and a stolen hovercraft?”

“I know. It sounds crazy.” She dropped onto the empty rocker next to him and filled her lungs will cold night air. “What did you want to talk to me about?”

“I’m going to Miami with Jake first thing in the morning.”

“I figured that was coming.”

“I didn’t tell you everything Sarge said.”

Her eyebrows pulled to full staff.

“I think I know who GM is.”

“Who?”

“Ever heard of IDR?”

She narrowed her eyes. “I don’t think so.”

“The Internet Date Rapist.”

“Holy shit. The guy who meets women on dating sites, and drugs and rapes them? It was all over the news in Miami but I thought they had a suspect in custody.”

“They did, but they let him go.”

“When?”

“That’s crazy. Why’d they release him?”

“Good lawyers.”

“That’s disgusting. Good God. Do you think he could have Caitlin?”

“I don’t know. His full name is Gregorio Marino.”

“Should that mean something?”

“Santiago Marino.”

“Oh, my God. As in Chago Marino? Tony’s business partner?”

“Late business partner. Greg’s his son.”

She hesitated. “What if he took Caitlin? If he’s been out for a week, he had time.”

It was deadly quiet.

After a moment, she broke the silence. “Daryl wants me to go to Alpine with him in the morning.”

“Why?”

“He says he has a friend who has some video footage that might help us. His buddy is a hacker who won’t share it online.”

“A hacker? With video that might show something new? You should go,” he said. “That’s your wheelhouse.”

“That’s what I was thinking, too.”

The cold air sharpened his brain. He’d never mentioned Greg Marino to her. He’d left that part out, sparing her the details that Greg was the one who’d stalked Davis Frost, held a gun to skull, and busted his jaw.

Or that Marino was the one who’d tried to rip them off for the seventy-five million dollars they’d salvaged. Money they’d been trying to launder ever since. Duffle bags of dollars that felt more like a ball and chain than a path to freedom.
