DRUMTHWACKET

(609-683-0057; tour information: 609-683-0591; www.drumthwacket.org), 354 Stockton St. (Rt. 206), Princeton. Open to the public for tours on Wed. (except during Aug.); reservations are required and should be made at least a week in advance. Donations accepted. An elegant, pillared Greek Revival–style mansion is the official New Jersey governor’s residence. Prominent businessman and politician Charles Smith Olden built Drumthwacket (the name is the Scottish term for “wooded hill”) in 1835, and became the first governor to reside here. After nearly two centuries of private owners, state governors began living here in the 1980s. Docents lead 45-minute tours of six public rooms—including the music room, library, solarium, and governor’s study—used for business meetings and receptions. Across the front lawn is the Olden House, a white 18th-century farmhouse that was the property’s original residence. Gift shop and historic herb garden.
