The cups slip from my hands as I spin around to run back into the castle. I slam the wooden doors shut and fumble for the lock only to discover it isn’t there.

“Of course it wouldn’t be that easy,” I grumble as I brace the gap between the doors with my back. Down the hallway, Aneela, Ethan, and Cal race back to me.

“I felt your fear,” Aneela tells me, looking through the crack in the door. “What’s wrong?”

Ethan and Cal place their hands against the doors on either side of me having deduced I’m trying to keep something dangerous out.

“A hellhound,” I tell them. “He headed straight for me.”

“Maybe Levi has returned sooner than we thought he would. It sounds like he might have brought backup this time,” Ethan says.

“I didn’t see Levi, but I also ran in here as fast as I could.” I keep my back braced against the door, physically and mentally preparing myself for the hellhound’s attack.

We hear a light scratching sound come from the other side of the door. There’s a soft whine and then another scratch.

“Why is it scratching?” I whisper to Ethan. “I thought it would barrel right into the doors to try and knock them down.”

Ethan shrugs. Obviously he doesn’t have a clue what the hellhound is doing either. I ask Cal with raised eyebrows if he has any idea. Before he can answer, a loud, impatient knock comes from the other side of the door.

“Lilith!” I hear a female voice say to me. “Lilith, are you there?”

“That’s Abaddon,” I say. I only met her once in Hale’s realm, but she definitely made a lasting impression. “If that’s her …”

“… the hellhound is Luna,” Cal finishes for me.

I lean away from the door. Cal grabs one of the knobs, but before he can turn it, his father rests his hand on top of his to stop him.

“Let me look first,” Ethan says. “If this is some sort of trap with Luna as the bait, let me take the brunt of the attack.”

Cal frowns in disapproval, but he’s smart enough to know Ethan will never open the door unless he agrees to his terms. Cal drops his hand away from the knob as his father takes his place.

Cautiously, Ethan turns the knob and cracks the door open. Luna pokes her nose through and gently forces the door to open wide enough for her to walk into the castle. I’ve always thought hellhounds were beautiful creatures, but this is the first time I’ve ever been so close to one without holding a weapon in my hands. Luna’s flaming coat looks damp for some reason. At a little over five feet tall, she nuzzles Ethan’s shoulder affectionately while he pats her on the back of the neck with the same warmth.

“Hey girl,” he says, “we’ve missed you. Why in the world are you so wet?”

Luna looks behind her as if Ethan will be able to find the answer there.

“She was too impatient to get out of the stupid oasis,” Abaddon says outside the door.
