Their unceremonious resumption of everyday life makes the loss of their child feel mundane. As if they should have come to expect its inevitability. As if their entire visit to the hospital had been another calculated transaction in a long list of expected interactions between hopeful parents and doctors alike.

Civil conversation quickly becomes a luxury, and for months Thomas and Kamilla do not speak about anything beyond simple pleasantries. By this point, these conversations are more of a formality than they are coming from a place of genuine interest. Thomas knows when Kamilla has a bad day. She arrives home after him, contrary to most working days, and will shut the front door more aggressively. She’s conscious not to slam it, but there is a carefulness in which she closes the door on good days that is simply lacking on those where she’s struggled.

He hopes to get more from her when they speak. More than a dismissal of the pain she is feeling. Because he feels it too. And he wishes so badly to talk about it. But she seems more content with sweeping those feelings under the rug and moving on, insisting that she’s ‘fine’.

But Thomas can’t help but wonder whether ‘fine’ is even good enough anymore.
