ESCAPE TO SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

NOVEMBER 27 - DECEMBER 4, 1943

The sun had slipped behind Topaz Mountain over his right shoulder as he pulled the bicycle from under the pile of brush. With no moon, it was the perfect night for his escape. It was right where the men told him it would be. He was about one hundred yards south of the main gate to the camp. Now, he just had to follow the dirt road past Delta for the ten miles to where it connected with US 50.

It was a bitterly cold night. His breath seemed to freeze in the air in front of his face as he started riding. Fortunately, there was little wind for a change, so the constant dust did not obscure the ruts in the road.

He followed the dirt road until it dead-ended at US 50.

I figured right about traffic. He had seen only two sets of headlights on roads closer to Delta. With luck, there won't be anybody around when the truck arrives.

Laying his bike in the shallow ditch on the side of the road, he checked his watch. Great. I'm ten minutes early. Hope the guy's on schedule. It's gonna get really cold quickly in this ditch.

He saw headlights approaching from the south. He stretched out over the bike, using his dark clothes to conceal it. Two vehicles, a car and a truck with a loud exhaust, sped by without slowing. The driver in the truck flicked a cigarette butt out the window. It showered sparks as it hit the road right in front of him. A few notes of a western song floated down along with the butt.

Good. Nobody will see me unless they're looking for me.

A few minutes later, he heard a truck coming from the north. The lights blinked twice, and it stopped at the intersection of the highway and the dirt road.

The window on the passenger side rolled down.

"Quick, toss your bike in the back and follow it in. Put the tarp and some of that hay over you and the bike. We'll stop down the road a piece after we're well clear of Delta, and you can come up here. I heard they caught a man and his wife from the camp trying to sneak onto a freight in Delta last week, so security might have been stepped up some."

Gerald did as he was told, pulling the tarp over him as the driver engaged the gears, and they were off.

After about thirty minutes, Gerald felt the truck slowing and rocking as it pulled off the road.

He raised the corner of the canvas and looked out. He could see nothing except the stars. The crunch of boots on gravel came toward him.

"You can come on out now. It's okay. Sorry I had to do that to you. Hope you’re not frozen. Come on and get in the cab where it’s warm.”

They climbed in at the same time, Gerald setting his backpack on the floorboard.

The driver, a man in his
