In the example below, we're calculating the Sales Tax on various items. The Tax Rate is 20% and this has been entered in cell B3. The cell format of B3 is Percentage .

The formula in cell C6 is =B6*$B$3 .

As you can see, cell B3 in the formula has been set to an absolute reference. So, when we copy the formula (using autofill) to the rest of the cells under Sales Tax (column C), the reference to cell B3 remains the same.

If the Tax Rate were to change at some point in the future, we would change the value in cell B3 only, and the Sales Tax for all the items will automatically be updated.
