“This is not a restaurant.” Standing on the sidewalk at the entrance of the community center, I arched an eyebrow at Evan.

Tuesday might not have gone according to plan, but it had turned into one of the best days I’d spent in a long time. After we’d eaten, we’d watched a couple of movies while we’d talked about work, future plans, and life in general. When I’d headed home that night, it had been with reluctance, but I had breathed easier knowing that things between us felt settled and back to normal.

I hadn’t seen Evan on Wednesday, but when he’d texted to ask if he could plan our next outing, I’d agreed. Since I owed him dinner, I figured it was only right to let him choose the restaurant. When he’d told me to dress casually, I had been envisioning barbeque. So, when we’d pulled into the parking lot of the Wisteria Community Center, I had been confused, to say the least.

“Nothing gets past you, does it?” Evan teased, holding the glass door open for me to enter. “We can eat afterwards.”

Squinting against the glare of the fluorescent lights in the main lobby, I stepped aside, letting Evan take the lead since I didn’t know where we were going. “That’s fine, but what are we doing here?”

“Painting.”

I stared after him blankly. “Like a room?”

Evan snorted. “We’re not renovating the building.” Shaking his head, he continued past the unmanned welcome desk and through another glass door. He stopped just beyond the threshold, holding the door open with his shoulder. “Are you coming?”

I hurried to catch up, following him down a long corridor lined with open doorways on both sides. “Look, I’ll try anything once, but I should warn you. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body.”

“That’s okay. I volunteered you to model for the class. All you have to do is sit there and look pretty.”

My brain wholeheartedly rejected the idea, and it completely shut down mid-stride. Stumbling forward, I reached out for the wall to regain my balance. “You did what?”

“I volunteered you to model,” he repeated calmly. “How comfortable are you with nudity?”

I was going to murder him. Then, I was going to bring him back and murder him again.

“Oh, my god,” he said, his laughter echoing down the hallway. “Breathe, Patrick. I’m messing with you.”

The air left my lungs in a rush of air, and relief flooded my body. My pulse slowly returned to normal as my brain kicked back online, recognizing that I was just a dumbass and no actual threat existed.

In my defense, this wasn’t typical Evan behavior. Not to say that he couldn’t be funny, but it usually happened unintentionally. These past few days with him had been eye-opening, and I wondered what other aspects of his personality I had been missing out on.

“You’re hilarious,” I deadpanned, though we both knew I wasn’t really upset with him. “So, what are we really doing here?”

“Oh, we’re painting.” Still chuckling, he headed into the last doorway on the right.
