DID YOU KNOW?
Left Foot First
The first step on the Moon taken by Neil Armstrong was with his left foot.16
AFTER ARMSTRONGâS SPEECH
In case the spacewalk was aborted, NASA had instructed Armstrong to collect a small bag of lunar soil, called the contingency sample. He had decided to do this in the sunlight, but first he wanted to get the Hasselblad camera down and mounted on the control unit on his chest. He did that and then snapped the first pictures taken on the surface of the Moon. Armstrong then moved into the sunlight, reached into his thigh pocket and pulled out a collapsible handle with a detachable bag at one end. He managed to scoop up enough moon dust to fill the bag and even got a few small rocks. Then he reported back, âContingency Sample Mission Accomplished.â17
WHAT THE SECOND MAN ON THE MOON SAID
Most of us know what the first man said when he stepped on the surface of the Moon, but what about the second man? Buzz Aldrin summed up his initial thoughts of the Earthâs moon in four words: âBeautiful viewâ and âMagnificent desolation.â18
THE APOLLO 11 MOON DISASTER SPEECH THAT WAS NEVER GIVEN
Thankfully, this speech was never given, but it was written. U.S. President Nixon was prepared to give it if the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin never made it back to Earth. These are the words Nixonâs speechwriter, Bill Safire, crafted:
In The Event Of Moon Disaster:
Fate has ordained that the men who went to the Moon to explore in peace will stay on the Moon to rest in peace.
These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
These two men are laying down their lives in mankindâs most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.
They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.
In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.
In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow and surely find their way home. Manâs search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the Moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.
PRIOR TO THE PRESIDENTâS STATEMENT: The president should telephone each of the widows-to-be.
AFTER THE PRESIDENTâS STATEMENT, at the point when NASA ends communications with the men: A clergyman should adopt the same procedure as
