CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“YOU BOYS NEED to fix this. Not only are you half-brothers, but you’re brothers-in-law now.” Haisley tapped the toe of her cowgirl boot against the floor in irritation. She moved her persuasive, narrowed gaze from Cruise to LB in several demanding swipes. “Do you understand me?”

“I know I might be the problem most of the time, but what happened at your wedding wasn’t my fault,” Cruise said through ground teeth. “And because you’re married to my sister, I let the sucker punch go. Most men would be eating dirt if they dared.”

LB stood straighter, looking at Cruise like he had a lot to say but feared his wife’s reaction. When Haisley cleared her throat, LB’s frown relaxed. “Fine. I owe you an apology, Cruise. I allowed my protective side to get the best of me.”

Cruise was a bit put off by the apology. He knew exactly where it came from. Haisley had worked her magic. If the man had the audacity to punch an innocent man, then he should at least stand by his decision. “Just don’t let it happen again.”

“I’m sorry how I reacted, Cruise,” Haisley said. “Aja explained what happened with Ashley and her date. I should have never invited her, but I thought she’d changed.”

Cruise snorted. “Snakes don’t change, sis.”

“I assumed…”

“Yeah, that I stirred up trouble,” he muttered. He was still a bit cross over the entire situation.

“I’m truly sorry. And thank you, fellows, for putting aside your hatred. It’s important to me. To us.” She reached for LB’s hand. “Our baby should come into this world without any drama.”

It took Cruise a moment to catch on. “You’re pregnant?”

“Yeah. It’s early, but I had a doctor confirm the pregnancy this morning.”

Cruise whipped off his hat and slapped it against his thigh. “Damn, that was quick, but congratulations you two.” He brought her in for a tight hug, but then gently released her. “Sorry. I didn’t hurt the baby, did I?”

She laughed and settled her hand against her still flat stomach. “No, you didn’t hurt the baby.”

“Congratulations, Hais. And LB.” Cruise thrust out his hand and LB stared for less than a second before he took the offering. “I’m happy for you both.” And he was. “Hell, I’m going to be an uncle,” he said proudly.

“Shh. Not so loud, Cruise. We haven’t told anyone but you. I want to tell everyone at dinner.” Haisley craned her neck to look down the hallway to make sure they were still alone.

“Is this your way of buttering me up after you believed the worst in me?”

“Yes, but I also wanted you to know first.” Her eyes filled with moisture. “You’ve always been there for me. All through my childhood. A little too protective at times, but I know you had the best intentions.”

Cruise felt a heavy weight lift from his shoulders.

He didn’t want there to be any issues between him and Haisley.

However, he had a confession. He thought it best to tell her what happened with Rose Lee so Haisley didn’t find out later.
