THE CALL FROM Saul came just as Adam was climbing into Kendall’s Range Rover after dropping his truck off at Mark’s. It only made sense to use one vehicle. And control-freak Kendall insisted on driving. Apparently, Adam’s driving “sucked ass,” and there was a reference to driving like a grandma.

“Hey, Saul,” Adam said, pressing the speakerphone button so Kendall could hear the conversation also. “Whatcha got for me?”

“A couple of things. First, Jake interviewed Frankie’s best friend, and she was less than forthcoming. Jake got the feeling she might be more receptive to another female.”

“Hi, Saul, it’s Kendall. Have Jake set something up with her this afternoon, either at the PD or her school. I’ll talk to her and see if she has anything of value.”

“Got it,” Saul said. “Next up, the IT geeks were able to pull the GPS from Poppy’s Explorer. Looks like she’s been heading over to the southeast side of the city a couple of times a week. Stays for about an hour and a half, two hours max, then goes home.”

“Great,” Adam said. “Text the coordinates to Kendall, and we’ll see if we can figure out where she’s going, and for what.”

“We have a pool going back here on the where and the why, if you want to put a fiver in,” Saul said.

Adam knew it was all in good fun; hell, he had started many a pool during an investigation. But this was different. This was his sister-in-law. Adam didn’t feel much like participating, knowing how catastrophic the information they might uncover would be to his brother.

“I’ll pass,” Adam said, hoping his tone wasn’t coming off too pissy. He didn’t want the reputation that he was above a little harmless wager among investigators. It was still just a way for the other guys to detach, not get too personally invested so they could keep a clear head. And Frankie needed that more than making sure Adam wasn’t offended.

“Kendall?” Saul asked.

“Yeah, I’ll donate to the seeing a friend fund.” Adam knew she didn’t actually think Poppy was seeing a friend and lying to her husband about it. Like almost everyone else, she probably believed Poppy was cheating on her husband. But he appreciated her not jumping on that bandwagon for his sake.

“Okay,” Saul said. “Fletch just forwarded everything the geeks found to Kendall’s phone. Let me know if there are any issues.”

“How did the other interviews go?” Adam asked.

“Nothing so far. Seems Frankie was popular and well liked by all. But we still have more to interview, so there may be something there yet.”

“Thanks, Saul.” Adam ended the call.

Kendall pulled into the drive-through lane at Starbucks and ordered two Venti black coffees and two cream cheese Danishes. While they waited for their order, she pulled up the text messages and added the coordinates to her GPS.

“Looks like your sister has been meeting someone at a strip mall in Cherry Hills,” Kendall said. “Does she know anyone over there?”

“Not that I’m aware,” Adam said, “but I don’t know everyone she knows.
