I’m uncuffed and dumped in a small room with a table and a chair on either side. There’s a mirror the size of the wall opposite but the room is otherwise empty. I take a seat on one of the chairs and try not to shiver, but I’m still only wearing my purple dress. As cold as I am, I never want to take it off. My fingers find the bandage along my arm and peel it back to pick at the crusty wound, making me wince as it reopens. I hope it scars.

The mustached policeman enters the room and the chair opposite mine scrapes when he pulls it out. He puts a file on the table between us and sits down.

“I’m Detective Inspector Morris,” he says. “Do you know why you’re here?”

I shake my head, acting dumb.

“We have evidence you imprisoned your mother and there’s mounting evidence for grievous bodily harm against one of your school classmates.”

I stop myself from biting my lip. I should never have let Henry lock Mom in the car, but she would have followed me and made a scene. She would have ruined everything. It doesn’t matter now as she ruined everything anyway. Nausea rolls over me. I wish we hadn’t locked her in her car.

Detective Morris pulls out the fake ID Henry made me. “Fraud is also very serious,” he says. He waits for me to speak but I keep my mouth shut. The shiny mirror to our right reminds me we are not alone. Morris leans onto the table and pushes the file away.

“You know, I never liked my mom,” he says with a shrug. “If I could lock her somewhere and throw away the key … I would. Hell, I’d throw the mother-in-law in too.” He chuckles to himself.

I want to tell him I’m not an idiot and I know he’s trying to bait me, get me to admit to everything. Henry thought manipulation and hacking were the same thing, but Detective Morris doesn’t look easy to manipulate. I wish Henry were here to hack him. Put him in his place for me. I nod at the detective but keep my mouth shut. His smile disappears as he realizes I won’t talk.

“You’re in some big trouble,” he continues. “False imprisonment. That’s three years.”

I bite my tongue to stop from screaming at him. I’m a minor, won’t be eighteen for ages. I won’t do any time in a real prison and we both know it. He’s just trying to scare me.

“Grievous bodily harm? That’s even worse. Especially if he doesn’t survive.”

He’s fishing, but I bite. I’m too desperate to hear about Henry. There’s no way to tell if his program transferred. My mind is silent and there’s no buzzing in my arm. If he made it into Pete’s chip, then there’s still a chance he’s not lost.

I lean forward. “Who survives what?”

“Mr. Taylor is in surgery as we speak. He’s having something removed from his spine.” His dark eyes flick over me in a way that feels assessing.
