Caramel, carnival, cartwheel.

Nope. It still wasn’t working. She sat in the car and examined the house where she was meant to be doing the next product demonstration. Something about it was giving her a bad vibe. It had a kind of pretentious feel to it, but she couldn’t put her finger on why. The house was Hamptons style with a cute swing chair on the front porch. But for some reason instead of looking sweet and inviting, the swing chair seemed somehow unnatural or fake, as though no one had ever sat on it and possibly no one would ever be allowed.

She thought about the cupcakes that she’d left baking at home, having given Robert strict instruction to take them out and leave them on the bench to cool as soon as the timer went off. At least it was handy that he could do that for her since he was working from home. But had she taken things too far?

Maybe.

But then she remembered the phone call she’d received from Harriet two days after the karaoke night.

‘Karen, listen, I’m calling to apologise. I was totally out of line the other night and you need to know the truth. I lied about sleeping with Robert. I’m so sorry for scaring you like that.’

Karen had experienced a small kernel of hope, but it was quickly squashed. Because how could she possibly trust anything this woman was saying?

‘Everyone thought it was easy to pick the lie because I said my hair was blonde,’ Harriet had continued, ‘but I was trying to be tricky. I’m naturally a blonde, I dye it dark, so that one was the truth. And that means the “sleeping with someone’s husband” statement was the lie. You get it?’

Karen had stopped herself from snapping back, ‘I don’t really give a shit that you think you got clever with your two truths and a lie, because I still don’t trust a word you’re saying.’ Instead, she had said, ‘Thank you, Harriet, I appreciate the apology, but I still don’t understand why you would say it in the first place.’

‘That’s a fair question. I’ve had some concerns recently about Farrah’s friendship with Tallulah; I was worried they might not be so well suited. But during the karaoke night, I saw that Tallulah had left a nasty comment on a post Farrah had put up on Instagram. I got upset. That combined with being so drunk . . . I wasn’t thinking straight. I switched into mama-bear protection mode, and I decided to take it out on you. First, it was just cancelling your song – I knew you were looking forward to singing. But then . . . Obviously, I know it’s not an excuse for what I did next.’

Karen still wasn’t convinced. ‘What was the comment?’ she asked. I never spotted that one.

‘Don’t worry about it,’ said Harriet. ‘I spoke with Farrah the next day and she assured me she’d sorted it out with Tallulah, and everything was fine again. I really am sorry.
