George Marshall was the architect of the Marshall Plan, which ran from 1948 to 1952 and gave money to recovering European countries after World War II. Many consider the plan a success at reviving the European economies and keeping Communism away from Western Europe. Three months after President Truman announced the Truman Doctrine to send aid to Greece and Turkey in June 1947, Secretary of State George Marshall proposed the Marshall Plan or the European Recovery Program – American financial aid for European recovery. President Truman assigned the first appropriation bill on April 3, 1948, authorizing $5.3 billion in aid to be sent to Europe. When the European Recovery Program ended on December 31, 1951, it had spent almost $12.5 billion in aid. The Marshall Plan is significant because, as some would argue, it contributed to the development of Europe after World War II as well as showcased the United States’ charity; most countries did not send aid to other countries.
