Chapter 13
Oh, come on. You’ve gotta admit that was pretty hilarious,” Evan said, poking me in the arm.
“You do realize some of us like chemistry, right?” I asked.
“Chemistry’s awesome. But pulling off such a huge prank is even better. You gotta learn how to find joy in the little things.”
“I do. Like getting an A.”
Evan rolled his eyes. “A is for average. Always obedient. Where’s the fun in that? Besides, you don’t improve in something if you don’t mess around with it a bit.”
I opened my mouth to protest, but Evan plowed forward as if he were suddenly struck with the best idea. His face lit up. “Hey, come with me. We’ve gotta go try something.”
I folded my arms and planted my feet firmly. “I’m not interested in any more pranks.”
Evan rolled his eyes. “It’s not a prank. I’ve got a great idea. Come on!”
I thought for a moment before deciding I’d better just follow him and get it over with. He led me around the corner of the school where no police stood guard, then slipped the magical ring onto his finger. He looked up and I followed his eyes to a security mirror on the roof.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
Evan ignored me. “I wish Roz would show her face again and tell me what she wants.”
“No, Evan, don’t call for her!”
“Shh. You’ll scare her away.” He kept his eyes glued to the mirror, waiting for her to appear. “I said, I wish to see Roz.”
Nothing happened.
“Guess you used up all your wishes,” I said, grateful the horrible woman didn’t show her hideous face. At least I could breathe easier knowing Evan wouldn’t be making any more magical mischief.
Evan looked at the ring in disgust. “What a waste. I was gonna wish for the teachers to do the Macarena, and then have the cheerleaders get into a mud fight.”
I rolled my eyes. “That is so typical.”
“Typical? What world are you living in? Can I visit?”
I scoffed and was about to retort with my own snarky remark when a gruff voice interrupted behind me. “You kids need to step away from the building.”
We were escorted by the cop back to the football field when a shrill screech pierced the air. Charlee and Ryanne, two of our school’s cheerleaders, were splattered with mud. Our escort chuckled then left.
“No way!” Evan laughed.
The girls stood beside a puddle of thick, goopy mud that gurgled and grew before our eyes. Several athletes joined the rest of the cheerleaders in a fit of laughter, gathering tightly around the fight, totally unaware of the magic happening down by their feet. Aimee, the head cheerleader who’d probably never gotten dirty her entire life, stood several feet away, hiding a dripping glob of mud behind her back.
“Fight! Fight! Fight!” nearby students chanted.
With narrowed eyes, Aimee threw the mudball into Charlee’s face, which splattered across Ryanne’s as well. The girls shrieked and everyone around them cheered while the three girls exploded into a frantic burst of flinging mud and ear-piercing shrieks.
