The cabin where I was supposed to spend the next few days was no more than a glorified place to sleep, tinier than my cottage back in Auteri. Though a team member had managed to create a solid four walls and roof, they hadn’t bothered with any frills. It was a plain square of dirt, with three sets of rickety bunk beds and a tiny, high-up window cut out of the planks.

Ettie frowned as she threw herself on the upper bed; Ember and I had the bottom bunk. Her fingers twitched around her wand, but Lia spun around.

“Don’t think about it,” Lia warned. “We’ve got to save our magic, now that we’re finally in the Twisted Forest.”

“I know, I know, but it’s miserable here. Thank goodness we’ll get out. I’d rather duel Grottel himself than be stuck in this—” Ettie cut off, looking down at me.

I tried to summon up a smile. “Don’t worry about me.” I gestured at the map. “I’ve got plenty to do here—I’ll be busy.”

The door screeched open and Master Arata stomped inside, Master Roone trailing behind her. “Where’s my team?” she snapped. “We’ve got to get a move on while there’s daylight. I’m not letting my team stay out when it’s dark.”

The Elite triplets rolled out of their beds and jumped into a line, bobbing into quick bows. “Ready for our mission, Master Arata.”

The Master Witch only nodded. Then she turned to me. “Novice Evergreen?”

My heart leaped as I scrambled upright, nearly falling as I stumbled out of the bed. “Yes?”

Was—was she going to let me go along with them? As a guide?

“Give us the latest coordinates on the map,” Master Arata snapped.

Hope stirred in me as I pulled out the scroll, smoothing it out over the thick blanket of the bottom bunk bed.

The team needed this spell to stay safe. And even if Master Arata was persnickety, I didn’t want her to get hurt.

I breathed in deep, calling on my magic for the spell. The faces of my friends flashed in my mind—steadfast, strong Charlotte and cheery, troublemaking Davy. I chanted, “A search for two friends close to my heart, show their parents so they will never be apart. Show me over time, the future I need to divine.”

The map flickered gold and scarlet next to that waterfall maybe half a mile from Grottel’s tower, shooting out from the north and south ends of the tumbling waters. “Here’s the concentration of magic,” I said, studying the shifting ink marks. “And… ah, fairly soon, it looks like the powers of the Culling will start shifting to the northeast and southeast.”

“It’s quite like scrying, really, what you’re doing there,” Lia murmured, her dark hair falling over her face as she studied the map. “Impressive. Have you ever considered you might have an affinity for knowledge magic or scrying?”

A thrill of excitement rushed through my blood. An Elite with knowledge magic was praising me for her very own affinity?

“Oh!” I said. “I’m not sure I’d be able to manage proper scrying; my magic is mostly good for repairs and potions.
