Francis Darwin (1909), who prepared the transcription of “Essay” (1844a) from the “Fair Copy,” also observed in that same footnote in which Darwin expressed his alarm at the thought of global catastrophes and the creation of species “in showers world over,” that “in the above passage [the footnoted passage quoted earlier] the author is obviously close to his theory of divergence” (145). He might well have been right in thinking that. The principle of divergence is a component of the Origin, of course, but appears first in somewhat more complete form in the ill-fated “Big Species Book.”
