Channel Option Two: Business Directories

The second channel where companies must be visible in order to be found is in business directories. Companies register their information on Yelp, Yellow Pages, Foursquare, Google, business associations, chambers of commerce, and various niche directories on the internet.

Every business directory requires a company to ensure that all necessary information is included and that it’s updated. Listing a new phone number, a new promotion, a new review, a new event, a new location, or any of a myriad of common changes is tedious and scattershot. What business even remembers where it is listed, much less thinks about visiting every directory for regular data updates?

No business directory pulls this information from the company’s website in real time. Even Google doesn’t pull this data from the website. You’re required to register your business and maintain duplicated content on Google My Business. Chamber of commerce directories have business listings, and possibly links to social media sites, but even they lack real website integration. Data duplication requires substantial time and effort to maintain, eventually becoming hard to manage and resulting in a business either giving up on directory updates or ending up with inconsistent or incorrect data.
