MJ didn’t sleep well that night. Nikos didn’t look any better rested the following morning either, which didn’t help. She’d not been able to stop her mind from drifting to all the things they could’ve been doing instead—things that would have been far more fun. At least then she’d have felt she’d earned her sleepless night.

But they were foolish things, the things she and Nikos could’ve been doing, she told herself for the millionth time. They couldn’t lead to anything permanent. And, with the best will in the world, those sorts of foolish things could lead to hurt feelings.

She’d vowed to her Aunt Joan and herself to do everything in her power to heal the rift between their two families. She couldn’t do anything now that might jeopardise that. It’d be selfish and self-defeating. Besides, if Siena did truly love Christian, then MJ would do everything in her power to smooth the way for her sister, not make matters worse.

‘I thought you said you were on a leave of absence,’ Nikos said when she collected her parcel from the airport the next morning.

‘I am.’

A smile touched his lips. ‘And you call me a workaholic.’

‘You are.’

‘Pot.’ He pointed to her and then himself. ‘Kettle.’

She laughed. She couldn’t help it. There was a subtle change in Nikos today. His step was lighter and his eyes brighter—and she couldn’t prevent it from infecting her.

From the airport, they headed straight to the marina. He turned his phone towards her and pointed to a storm front showing on the screen. ‘There’s a storm forecast for this evening.’

She wrinkled her nose. ‘I’m definitely a fair-weather sailor. I don’t want to be tossed around like a cork on big seas in gale-force winds.’

‘We’ll be at my grandfather’s island enjoying a cool drink by the time this hits.’ Keen eyes raked her face. ‘But I’ll check with more experienced heads before we leave, just to make sure.’

‘I’d appreciate that.’

Fifteen minutes later, he returned from the marina’s main office. ‘Common wisdom claims the storm will miss us completely.’

‘I like the sound of that.’

‘We might get a shower later this evening, but that’s probably the worst of it.’

‘Excellent.’ She gestured to their yacht. ‘What do you want me to do?’

He helped her on board and then pointed to a seat. ‘What you can do, MJ, is take the weight off and enjoy the ride.’

She realised then the reason for his good mood—Nikos loved to sail. And, as she watched him navigate the boat out of the harbour, she discovered that she loved to watch him sail.

He looked at home on board this small yacht. At one with the elements. Who would have guessed that beneath those immaculate business suits beat the heart of a man at home on the sea?

A brisk breeze filled their sails and they clipped along at a playfully brisk pace. She lifted her face to the sun and closed her eyes, enjoying the sound of splashing water, the cry of a sea bird and the scent of salt that seasoned the air.
