Chapter 11

Dad pulled the car into a bare field, keeping it close to the trees and on the side away from the house. Chris's dark blue Ford Taurus melted into the growing shadows of the evening. I found myself wishing it were later in the season when a tall crop of ripe corn could give us added protection from whoever was in the house next door.

Dad turned the car off and turned to Matt and me. "Remember what we told you, you two will follow orders to the letter. You're part of my team now, I expect the same obedience from you I did from Chris when he joined. If you don't follow instructions exactly, you could jeopardize the mission, end any chance of saving Marisa, or get us all killed. Do you understand?"

"Sir, yes, sir!" Matt and I responded crisply. I barely suppressed the urge to salute as if I were at the Academy.

"We'll stay in the trees as we approach the house to avoid tipping them off," Dad ordered. "Does everyone have a cell phone? Good, make sure you have everyone else's number. If you get separated from the group, use your phone to find the rest of the team, but finding the antidote and getting out safely is the priority here." He glanced at Chris and went on, "Even capturing Kestler is secondary."

Chris nodded soberly. Even if it was secondary, the determined expression on his face showed that it was still a priority to him.

"One last thing before we go," Dad finished. "My team always prays before we start a mission."

Chris, Matt, and I bowed our heads reverently as Dad prayed, "Dear Heavenly Father, please protect us as we try to find the antidote to save Marisa. Give us success and allow us to get the antidote back to her in time. We ask this in your Son's precious name. Amen."

"Amen," Chris echoed emphatically. "Let's go!"

Matt and I followed Dad and Chris through the narrow line of trees to the edge of the farmyard. The house was a very normal looking two-story house, complete with white vinyl siding and white picket fence. A row of well-trimmed hedges lined the sidewalk up to the front porch. A small group of overgrown trees lined the left side of the yard and open fields edged the other two. A man dressed as a gardener was trimming the hedges meticulously.

“One of Kestler’s men?” Chris speculated as he watched the gardener. He checked the clip on his gun without even taking his eyes off the gardener. The fact that my best friend’s brother was actually a deadly secret agent never seemed more real than when I saw him in action.

“Likely.” Dad didn’t check his gun, only flexed his hands slightly as he watched the gardener. “I’ll take care of him and see if we can’t get in the front door.” He didn’t even shift his gaze as he directed, clearly used to heading up a team and being obeyed. “Chris, make a circuit of the house.
