She felt a moment of panic as the rope stretched under her weight and she dropped vertically for a metre or so. Then the rope came taut and she stopped falling. She recalled now that when she had practised with this system at the Gathering, that initial drop had always been the worst part. There was always the fear that the rope would snap and she would continue to plummet vertically down.
Now she was sliding down the rope at an angle, the rope that she held on to making a sizzling sound as it passed over the rough surface of the main rope. Her cloak billowed out behind her and she felt a sense of exhilaration as she accelerated down towards the keep.
Too fast, she thought, and pulled her arms apart, so that the hand rope, looped over the main cable, pulled tighter, slowing her descent. The ropes whirred louder as the friction increased.
Looking down, she saw Haltâs dark shape by the balustrade. There was a moving gantry set on the balustrade, designed to support tubs of boiling water or oil. Halt had passed the rope over the top of it so that she would slide in above the metre-high wall, rather than slamming into the face of the keep. She slowed her descent further, tightening the handholdâs grip on the cable as she approached the wall. The rope whirred louder as she slowed down.
Halt was standing waiting to help her. She raised her legs to clear the balustrade, then felt his firm grip on her arm and a hand around her shoulders as he brought her to a stop, her feet finding purchase on the roof.
For a few moments, she clung to him, her arms around his neck.
âOh, Halt, itâs so good to see you! How on earth did you get here? How did you know we were in trouble?â
He put a warning finger to his lips and she realised that in the excitement, she had been babbling and her voice had been louder than she had intended. She bobbed her head in apology and he leaned closer to her and whispered.
âTime for explanations in a minute. Letâs get Will down first.â
She nodded, somewhat chastened, and stood back as he tugged on the rope three times to signal Will that they were ready for him.
