Chapter Twenty-Five
The text from Katrina came in at eight-thirty.
Twenty-two hundred. Lisiou Street.
Ten oâclock. Military time.
Janelle frowned at the message on Simonâs new burner phone. âSheâs all business, isnât she?â
âAlways was.â
âAnd aggressive, as usual.â
âDetermined.â
Whatever word Simon wanted to use for her, Janelle couldnât describe the relief she felt to know Simon had never really been in love with her.
That might be petty, but there it was. And it told her more about how serious her feelings for him were than she wanted to admit.
But there was no time for self examination now. They had a job to do.
The phone buzzed a second time.
Katrinaâs next message was, âHave dinner before you come.â
âBossy,â Janelle added to her opinion of the woman.
Simon gave her a knowing grin as they rose and went to the closet.
Once more, they dressed in dark clothes in case they needed to hide in the shadows. Janelle pulled on a black Dolman shirt and black jeans, and added her sturdiest walking shoes. A black scarf wrapped around her now blond hair to conceal the color completed her outfit.
She couldnât bring herself to wear her black snood. Too many memories of Buenos Aires.
Then, following Katrinaâs orders, they made their way to the kitchen to finish the leftover pitas from lunch.
After cleaning up, Simon grabbed the backpack heâd assembled while Janelle had still been asleep. âI think we should rent a car tonight. Weâll need mobility.â
âSounds good to me.â
And they headed out.
Near the place where theyâd rented the motorcycle, Simon selected a black Opel Corsa hybrid with a full charge, and took off for the City Center.
The traffic was harrowing to put it mildly. Stop lights and speed limits were only a suggestion to the natives here, and Janelle feared someone would hit them before they reached their destination. Which would be a disaster on many levels.
But Simon maneuvered masterfully through the ancient narrow streets lined by old limestone structures, and at last, they pulled up to the curb next to a cafe on Lisiou.
Simon wedged the rental between a van and a motorcycle, and they got out. At a table in a nearby restaurant on the corner, they found Katrina and Anders enjoying a late coffee.
Al fresco was the way of life here, and colorful tables and chairs from several eating places were spread out into the alleyway, crowding the area even more.
Katrina waved at the Corsa down the street. âGetting soft, Simon?â
âNo need to waste energy.â
Anders ignored the remark. âHave you got your receiver?â he said to Simon.
âI do.â
âLetâs go somewhere more private.â Anders said, rising.
He led them down the narrow walkways alongside the narrow streets filled with noisy Athenians and tourists having dinner, shopping, or sightseeing. At another crowded restaurant, someone was singing Happy Birthday to a customer.
Delicious smells of sauces and grilled meats filled the air, making Janelleâs mouth water, even though sheâd eaten her fill in the flat. Like Buenos Aires, restaurants here opened at nine and didnât close until one or two in the morning.
Janelle was glad they were blending in, and she didnât think anyone was following them.
