CHAPTER 18

Erik ran through the hospital hallway, his heart beating so damn hard he could just about hear it. He’d been at a therapy session this morning. He should have been with Hannah. He’d known she wasn’t okay last night, dammit.

Rachel was the first person he saw. She stood in the hall outside an open door.

“Is she okay?” Erik asked before he’d stopped running.

Rachel nodded, tilting her head toward the room. Inside, Hannah was on the bed, Nico beside her, holding her hand as the technician set up the ultrasound machine.

Anger tried to pulse through his veins at the sight of Nico standing where he should be. But he forced the emotion down and focused on her. Her pale features. Her too-wide eyes. He should be glad she had her brother and she wasn’t alone.

He crossed to the bed. Nico stepped back and quietly left the room while Erik took his spot, lifting her hand. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. I got some cramping…and there was blood. Erik…I’m scared.”

Her words were like a fist around his heart, squeezing. “It’ll be okay.”

He knew he had no fucking right to say that, but he couldn’t have stopped himself if he tried. He needed to offer her some sort of reassurance that everything would be all right.

It was the same sonographer as last time. She put gel on the transducer before pressing it to Hannah’s lower abdomen, where there was the smallest hint of a bump.

The second the heartbeat sounded through the machine, the air rushed from Erik’s chest and tears filled Hannah’s eyes.

“Heartbeat sounds good,” the sonographer said confidently, pressing a few keys on her machine. Suddenly, an image popped up on the screen. “And there’s your baby.”

Hannah’s fingers tightened around his hand. “And the baby’s okay?”

“Yes. Everything looks as it should.”

Hannah’s eyes closed and Erik leaned down, kissing the top of her head, lips lingering.

The sonographer lifted the transducer and wiped her stomach. “I’ll email these to your doctor and send her down.”

When the woman stepped out of the room, Erik helped Hannah sit up.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

“You do not need to apologize. Ever. If you think something’s wrong, I want you to come here.”

“I made you worry.”

“I worry about you regardless of where you are or what you’re doing.”

She leaned her head against his chest, and he just held her. They didn’t speak as they waited for the doctor. It was like they both needed the quiet time to just hold each other.

When the doctor finally walked in, Hannah straightened. The woman gave them a warm smile. “Hi. I’ve just looked at your scans and read through the notes, and it appears everything is going well.”

Hannah frowned. “But what about the cramps and bleeding?”

“It can happen during pregnancy.” Her eyes turned sympathetic. “Sometimes external factors like stress can contribute to these things.”

Erik’s muscles locked. Of course she was stressed. A fucking human trafficker was after her, and Erik couldn’t track the asshole down.

The weight of his failure pressed on his shoulders.
