- Chapter Eleven -

The Encounter

The sound of a fist knocking against the wooden door filtered in through the noisy college corridor. Brendan stood outside Liam and Dryden’s room door. There was no answer, so he knocked again. The door flung back exposing Dryden’s pale Caucasian face. His blue eyes flashed with recognition the instant his thin frame stood behind in the open doorway. His mousey-brown hair sat tousled and his body rigid.

“Hey.” Dryden scratched behind his ear in a nervous motion. “What’s up?”

Brendan peered over Dryden’s shoulder and saw Liam leaning over his study desk. Papers and textbooks were spread all over the top. His appearance was dishevelled, similar to Dryden’s. He looked up briefly from his work to glance in Brendan’s direction.

“Dr Ernest has asked for us in the underground,” Brendan kept his voice low trying not to be heard by unwanted ears.

“But, we have assignments to do.” Dryden’s voice sounded strained.

Liam looked at Brendan, his face paler than normal. “It’s Wednesday night and we have several assignments due in the next couple of days. When are we supposed to finish?”

Brendan shrugged. “He asked for us. I’m going to get Hayley now. I’m sure you guys will be fine.” He turned to go but stopped. “Didn’t you finish your assignments last week?”

“Yes, but that’s not the point. We have to check them.” Liam’s voice was prickly. “We have to make sure they are perfect.”

“Really, man, you’ll be fine. Besides, I don’t think he wants us for that long.” Brendan reassured them, trying to get them to move. “I’ll see you down there in a few minutes.”

Dryden sighed loudly. Liam kicked and nudged the desk annoyed.

“All right.” Dryden sounded reluctant, but the request had come from Dr Ernest, so Brendan knew that they would come.

Brendan heard the door close behind him as he turned to go and get Hayley. It was not normal for him to be in the girl’s dormitory. Tingles ran down his spine as he passed many girls. It felt like he was breaking the rules, but he was not. Boys were allowed out in the corridor but not inside the closed rooms. He approached a group of girls that were slightly shorter than he was. They huddled together, and excited chatter filled his ears. Right when he reached them, the girl with the long dark brown hair turned and gazed up at him. Instantly the blood ran to Aaron’s face. If Brendan’s face could, it would be red right now. He was looking at the face of an angel.

Gemma’s sky blue eyes were studying his face. Her full lips turned up at the corners with a smile. “Hey, Brendan.”

She remembered his name. His heart skipped a beat. “Hey,” he choked out the word, attempting to follow it with a relaxed smile. He wanted to crawl into a hole, but he also wanted to stay and talk—if he didn’t want to make a fool of himself. He ran a hand through his hair. “So, how’s it going?”

She turned completely from her friends to face him.
