Chapter 18

Adelina came home with stiff fingers and an aching back.

“Remind me again why James won’t let us have sewing machines?”

Alison snorted. “I take it lessons with Ms. Walden aren’t going so well?”

“Let’s just say that Dave will continue to be the sole breadwinner of this house for quite a while.”

“Something tells me he won’t mind that so much.” She was sitting in the armchair by the bookshelf, her elbows in the air as she tried to finish a braid. Her thick hair ran all the way to her waist, but in the tight braid, it only reached her upper back.

“Let me help.”

“Please.”

Adelina wandered over to take the strands from Alison, clumsily wrapping them around each other to pull the hair back as tightly as possible.

“A sewing machine sure would be nice with all the clothes I have to patch up.”

“Wouldn’t it? Even just seeing it in action would be exciting.”

“What about one of those tablets? I heard they were all the rage at Felicity’s coming-of-age ball. Apparently all of the worlds are using them besides ours. Stuck in the dark ages, we are.”

“Not all the worlds. But the majority used them. They also danced weird.”

“Eh, perhaps some of James’s censorship comes in handy at times.”

“We’ll agree to disagree,” Adelina said with a smirk. “Besides, I’m too rebellious for any of his rules to stick.”

“But are you rebellious for the sake of justice, or are you rebellious just to be rebellious?”

“Touché, my friend. But I’m still young.”

“So am I,” Alison remarked. “Two kids. Two kids! I can hardly believe it. And a home… we’re very blessed.”

“How did you and Dave meet?” Adelina used a clear rubber band to secure the braid and stepped back. “You seem very different but similar. Does that makes sense?

“I feel the same way.” A smile danced on her lips. “We were family friends growing up, and just always got on. He would make the plans, I would help him go through with them. We worked well together, and had fun together, and felt the same way about our place in the universe.” She laughed at Adelina’s expression. “I know it’s all gooey cliches, but sometimes they’re true. Sometimes people just fit.”

“You’re companions.”

“And lovers, too. We used to be a lot more handsy before Alexander. And of course, Dave’s been so stressed with work at the palace, that he’s been a bit tense lately.”

“I noticed that. It’s no wonder… James isn’t in his right mind.”

“I don’t blame him. I can’t imagine what losing Dave would do to me.”

She sat in silence for a minute, and Adelina let her mind wander to a loss she’d feel as equally.

“Have you ever been in love, Adelina?”

She jerked her head up. “No.”

“You said that awfully quickly.”

“I knew the answer awfully quickly.”

Alison held her hands up playfully. “Alright, I won’t push you.” She stood up and wandered to the kitchen counter to start cutting carrots. Adelina, ashamed that she was too exhausted to offer to help, took over Alison’s seat.

“The people outside of the palace know more about the other worlds than I thought.
