Chapter 22

I put down the last box. It contains a few books, clothes, and a potted plant Mom gave me.

“Something green to brighten your room.”

I actually moved a few days ago, but I kept a bunch of stuff at home because I still had to organize a few things, pack, and buy furniture. Now, I just have this last box to unpack, then I’ll be done, and I can settle into my new home.

It feels strange because although I’m allowed to arrange the room however I like, everything still feels unfamiliar. The room is painted white and has two large windows. The bed was already here, and it’s comfortable and totally adequate. The large, heavy wardrobe with a mirror, and the desk, also came with the room. All I had to get were the shelf in the corner, a table, and four chairs. I arranged the furniture the way I wanted it, hung a couple of Frida’s pictures on the walls, made the bed, and did everything I could to make the place feel like home. But it’s not easy, because I don’t really want to be here.

My phone rings. It’s Alex.

“How was the move? You done? Can we start your housewarming party already?”

Although I’ve been at the Siena Hartford Academy a while and even live here now, I haven’t lost contact with Alex, Kate, and Chrissy, fortunately. I know it won’t be easy to maintain these friendships because there are so many things in my life that I can’t talk to them about. But I mean to stay in touch with them.

“Yeah, I’m done, you can come tonight,” I reply.

I already asked Max and Lucia if outsiders are allowed inside the school or the residence.

“Only late afternoons at school, when classes are over, but that’s just about not disturbing the school day,” Lucia explains. “If you’re worried about the key spirits, you know normal people can’t see their true form. And the spirits are pretty savvy about staying out of sight when they need to. So, don’t worry. If you want to bring someone here, obviously you’re allowed. But I recommend after hours when most students are in their rooms and it’s quieter.”

“Actually, hardly anyone ever brings outsiders into the school or the residence,” Max pipes up. “They’re just such different worlds, and even if it’s not officially against the rules, we try not to mix them.”

Lucia elbows her lightly on the side and rolls her eyes. “That’s just because most of us aren’t friends with those people. But there’s no reason you shouldn’t be, and you’re allowed to bring them here if you’d like.”

“Just because something’s officially allowed doesn’t mean you have to do it.”

Lucia sighs. “As you can tell, Max has a really strong view on this. But don’t let her put you off.”

I don’t plan to. Still, I don’t want to annoy anyone, so I’m keeping the party small. I’ve invited my friends but only those three.

“Great, around eight?” Alex suggests.

“Sure, works for me. Can you tell Chrissy?”

“Yup.
