Chapter Sixteen

Malia and Jaden returned to headquarters. Disembarking from the saucer, they found Sydney running over to greet them. She grabbed Jaden in a bone-crushing hug.

“We were so worried about you,” she said with a sniffle, and Jaden realized she was crying.

“I’m all right,” he assured her, patting her on the back.

“We didn’t detect any nuclear explosions in space, so I’m guessing that part of the mission didn’t go according to plan?”

Malia and Jaen took turns explaining everything that had happened.

“Well, I’m glad you’re both all right,” she said with a sigh. “Try to get some sleep. We’ll convene the council first thing in the morning and decide our next steps.”

They said goodnight to Sydney and left the building, heading toward their apartments.

“So, thanks for saving my ass,” Jaden said.

“You would’ve done the same for me.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” he said with a grin.

“Jerk,” Malia said, punching him in the triceps.

“Seriously though, if the queen had captured you, there wouldn’t have been a damn thing I could do about it. She’s way out of my league.”

“If you hadn’t gone wandering off, you wouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with,” she chided him. “We’ve gotta stick together if we face them again. I’m willing to go off script if the situation warrants it, but you and I need to be on the same page first.”

“I know, I know,” he said, guilt welling up inside of him. She wouldn’t have had to risk her life if he’d stuck to the plan. “I’m sorry.”

As they approached their apartment building, Jaden spotted someone lying in the grass. It was full night, and they were beyond the reach of the building’s lighting. But he got to his feet and Jaden recognized him. “What are you doing out here at this hour?”

“Oh, just a little stargazing,” Stephen said, coming over to meet them. “To be honest, I kept watching the shadow of that mother ship go by, wondering if I’d ever see the two of you again.”

Malia hugged him, and Jaden was pretty sure she heard her trying to stifle a sob.

“Don’t worry,” Jaden told him. “You can’t get rid of us that easily.”

The two of them gave him a quick rundown of their mission as they walked up to their building’s second floor.

“It’s too bad the nukes didn’t work,” Stephen said when they were done. “What will you do now?”

“Don’t know yet,” Jaden said. “We’re meeting with the others in the morning to figure that out, hopefully.”

They said goodnight, and Jaden went into his apartment. Savannah came running to greet him, hugging him tight. Jaden returned the embrace, rubbing her back. But then she pulled away and punched him in the chest; he realized she was crying.

“Ow! What was that for?”

“You’re a fool, Jaden Kwan. Going running off like that? Why can’t you take your own safety into consideration when you go off on these missions?”

“I’m sorry,” he said, sincerely regretting putting her through this.

“Sometimes I think you must have a death wish…”

“No, it’s not that, I swear,” he said, hugging her again.
