The servo, the microcontroller, and the robot’s sensors are some of the most integral parts of any robot to be entered into competition. Once team members have a good sense of the basics to these parts, they can then learn how to “break the rules” and modify them to improve or change the robot’s functionality.

This is a kind of servomotor that hobbyists might use in radio-controlled model cars or other vehicles, as well as in many kinds of simple robots.

MODIFYING THE SERVO

The most common reason to modify the servo is to gain speed control. The normal servo doesn’t rotate continuously because of an inbuilt potentiometer (“pot”) that determines the angle at which the servo is. Working around this problem is one of the main ways of gaining flexibility and stability.
