The scent of fresh pasta makes my stomach turn. I look at Aria as she cranks out food while Tyson watches the children. The Russo brothers have all gathered around, doing different things to help make the family meal.

As they work together, talking and laughing about their days, it’s easy to forget that they are a family of killers.

To an outsider, they would look like a normal Italian American family, getting together to make dinner and spend time together. Aria is at the head of it all, bossing around her brothers and husband, watching with a smile.

I get up from the island, the eggs I was cracking abandoned as I head for the nearest washroom. I slam the door shut behind me before kneeling beside the toilet and throwing up everything I’ve eaten in the last several hours.

I don’t know why I agreed to come out today when I feel like complete shit.

Except, I’ve been feeling sick for the last week. Today is the first day that I’ve finally started to feel better. Damien looked so excited when he told me about going to Aria’s for a family dinner.

I thought that it would be fine to go but it feels like my stomach is kicking me in the ass for that decision.

There is a gentle knock at the door. For a second, I consider groaning and telling whoever it is to go away. I want to wallow in my misery.

“Come in,” I say instead, knowing that if I don’t answer, whoever is waiting for me will go get Damien.

He will break the door down if he thinks something is wrong with me.

The door opens and Aria steps inside before shutting it behind her. She looks down at me over the small swell of her baby bump. There is a knowing smile on her face as she opens one of the cupboards and pulls out a pregnancy test.

“Damien says that you’ve been sick all week,” she says as she crouches down beside me. “He might be oblivious to what’s going on, but I’m not. Take the test.”

“There’s no way that I’m pregnant.”

Except there are plenty of ways I could be pregnant.

I take the test from her, my hands shaking as I look down at it. Even though I know it’s possible, it doesn’t seem real.

“Do you want me to stay with you or do you want me to leave you alone?”

“Alone please,” I say, my voice breaking slightly as fear grips me.

Aria nods and takes my hand, giving it a squeeze. “No matter what the test says, everything is going to be alright. I won’t tell my brother what’s going on in here. Just take your time and I’ll tell him that you’re having girl problems.”

“Thank you.”

She stands and leaves the room, the door closing behind her with a soft click. My heart is hammering in my chest as I rip open the box and take out the test. I sigh and take it, terror running through me.

At first, I consider not taking the test.
