The restaurant chosen was Adrian's, the fancy Russian steakhouse where I had stabbed one of Sasha’s men. This time when I walked inside, I didn’t bother stopping at the hostess counter. I strolled right in toward the private dining room in the back of the restaurant. The beading on my gold cocktail dress shimmered in the dim lighting. It was form fitting, long sleeved, and cut off at my knees. The best part of my attire was, of course, my strappy gold heels that wrapped halfway up my calves.

Coming upon the black painted doors, I noticed that the antique two-way mirror had been replaced since I had shot through it. I hope I don’t have to stab anyone tonight.

Dean opened a door and Asher and Will went inside the private dining room before me. Brenna, Finn, and the other two goons, whose names I needed to learn, were guarding the cars and the cocaine.

“You’re late,” Stefan said right as I walked into the small room. Everyone stood from their seats. Stefan was at one end and Nicoli at the other, both taking each head of the table like kings. Jamie had chosen the seat to Stefan’s left, like always. Next to Jamie and to the don’s right was Ivano De Luca, Nicoli’s younger brother. Goons from both families stood along the walls, silent and watchful.

“Fashionably,” I quipped. The entire right side of the table was vacant. I had the choice to sit to my father’s right or the don’s left. My gaze swept over everyone, landing on Nicoli last.

He greeted me with a devilish smirk as his eyes raked down my body and back up. “With how gorgeous you look in that dress, I’d say it was worth the wait.”

I made it a point not to look at Jamie. The don’s words were flattering, but it was just another tool of the game. He would undoubtedly prod and push to get us to react in a certain way to reveal something we didn’t want him to know. I knew this because I had planned to do the same. Now that I was here, I felt too worn out to play games. “Are you saying I wouldn’t have been worth the wait if I had shown up in jeans and a T-shirt that said, ‘Eat a Bag of Dicks’?”

I caught Ivano’s surprise before he snorted and quickly tried to cover it up by clearing his throat. Stefan’s blank mask was in place, but his eyes sparkled with unreleased laughter. I finally glanced at Jamie and he held a proud smile. I returned my attention to Nicoli. He wasn’t perturbed in the slightest. If his grin and intense gaze were anything to go by, I would have said I entertained and fascinated him.

“It’s not every day a woman renders me speechless,” Nicoli said.

I normally would respond to that with a witty remark. Instead, I just smiled. “If you promise to be a gentleman, I’ll sit next to you.”

The mirth in Nicoli’s eyes dimmed just before they narrowed in an assessing way.
