“We need to talk about Michael and what happened to him,” Kenzie told Terri-Lyn.

A trip down memory lane was fine when you met an old friend under different circumstances. But she was there because of Michael, Terri-Lyn’s son, who had died after months of physical abuse. It wasn’t exactly a high school reunion.

“It was an accident,” Terri-Lyn said. “A tragic accident. I don’t know what he was doing climbing around like that. He wasn’t usually that daring. But we tried to keep him safe. Childproofing. That room should have been locked. One of the staff must have left it open after cleaning it. No one could know that Michael would wake up and go exploring like that, would climb over the edge…” She trailed off, dabbing at her eyes.

Kenzie fixed Terri-Lyn with a firm stare. It felt familiar, Terri-Lyn telling stories or going off on a tangent and Kenzie having to be the one to demand the truth.

“Terri-Lyn. That’s not what happened. I already told you that I know that isn’t what happened. Michael was not killed in that fall.”

“He was. There are a ton of witnesses. Everybody in the house can tell you that’s what happened.”

“As far as I know, only one person actually saw him fall. If there were others, they have not come forward. Everybody is just going with the story that they didn’t know what had happened or that there was anything wrong until Sylvia screamed. And she screamed when she saw him on the ground. She didn’t see him go over the edge.”

Terri-Lyn’s eyes welled with tears. “Don’t be like that, MacKenzie. Please. I know you’re probably still mad at me, but don’t mess up this case because of something that happened years ago.”

Kenzie shook her head and tried to read Terri-Lyn’s expression. “What are you talking about? I am telling you what I know about your son’s death. It doesn’t have anything to do with… anything else.”

“I always figured you knew. You just shut me and everyone else out and pretended you didn’t care anymore. But that was high school, MacKenzie. Can’t you let it go now?”

“Let what go?” Kenzie was baffled. She had no idea what Terri-Lyn was going on about. It was true that she had become more withdrawn during high school. She and her parents had been so focused on Amanda and keeping her happy and well until Kenzie was old enough to donate her kidney that Kenzie had neglected her friendships. But what did that have to do with anything?

“You know,” Terri-Lyn prompted. “With Frankie Carter.”

A flood of memories was attached to that name.

Kenzie had always thought it strange how people could forget about traumatic things and bury them so deeply that they didn’t even remember what had happened. She knew that it was true, it happened, but she was always a little bit suspicious. Did they really forget completely? Maybe they just avoided thinking about it. She could begin to understand it with someone like Zachary, who had gone through such terrible things in his past.
