Giselle

We must’ve been driving for a good half an hour before I asked, “How much longer until we’re there?” I wondered as the city came into view.

“We have one stop to make before the ball,” Carlo stated without offering any other explanation. It had been such a nice stretch of peacefulness—I had no desire whatsoever to end it.

Instead, I sat back and enjoyed the rest of the ride.

Another fifteen minutes or so and we pulled into a large, almost empty parking lot.

There were two other cars. Our driver pulled up and stopped right beside them.

Carlo didn’t wait for him to come around and open our door. He got out first and then reached back for my hands.

I looked at the two-story building and frowned. This was definitely not where a ball of any kind would be held. The sign said it was a medical clinic.

“Are you sick?” I asked Carlo as he took my hand and walked with me to the front doors. There were beautiful, ornate columns decorating the exterior of the building.

“No, I’m fine,” he answered and opened the door for me. I walked through and into the quiet lobby.

Carlo seemed to know where he was going, so I let him lead me.

We walked down a long, empty hallway until he finally stopped in front of a brown door. The name on the door was in curly antique letters. Dr. Mancini.

His hand touched the brass doorknob and I asked, “Why are we at a clinic?”

“You’ll find out. Just trust me.” Then he practically dragged me through the doors.

A woman who looked like a nurse stood at the front desk. She greeted us in Italian. Carlo spoke to her briefly, and then she told us to follow her.

I frowned at Carlo and felt more than a little confused.

And worried.

Was he ill and not telling me?

Did he need some kind of test done?

Or medication?

I’d never seen him take any kind of prescription medicine before.

The nurse showed us into one of the exam rooms. She turned to me with a gown in her hand and asked in English, “Please put this on, Mrs. Sovrano. The doctor will be with you in a minute.”

I took the gown from her. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I need this?”

She looked at me with kind eyes. “The IUD removal won’t take long. But the doctor prefers you to be in a gown.”

My jaw dropped.

Right down to the damn floor.

The nurse swiftly left and closed the door behind her.

With the anger of a thousand suns, I turned to Carlo. “Are you insane?” I whisper-yelled at him. Then I threw the gown at my tux-wearing lumberjack. “What the heck are you thinking?”

Without a flinch, he tossed the gown onto the exam table. “I’m thinking that since you agreed to have my baby, this was the first step. Removing your birth control. Is that not the first step?”

Good.

Grief.

Carlo Sovrano did not waste time.

“It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours since we talked about this,” I reminded him.

“Why wait? I need an heir, Giselle.
