Calories from Fat

Numerous health and government authorities, including the U.S. Surgeon General, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Heart Association, and the American Dietetic Association, recommend reducing dietary fat to 30 percent or less of total calories. However, that doesn’t mean you have to pass by all high-fat food products. For example, peanut butter with sugar added has 190 calories in a two-tablespoon serving. Of those, 130 calories are from fat— 68 percent. Add that peanut butter to two slices of whole wheat bread, which have 120 calories and 20 calories from fat, and the equation is different: now the fat is down to about 48 percent. It’s still higher than the recommendation, but by adding a glass of skim milk and an apple, you start to bring it down a healthy level.
