âHey, beautiful.â
âH-hey, Mike,â CJ said, thrown off guard by the obvious pleasure in the boy's voice. âUmm, what's up?â
âHaha, nothing much. I've been hoping you'd call. I hope you don't mind that I added my number to your phone, I never gave it to you when we went out so I figured what the heck.â
CJ smiled, recognizing a bit of the same nervousness in Mike's voice as he felt in his own. âThat's alright. I almost deleted it a half-dozen times though, before Jenna came over and talked to me.â
âShe did?â
He started to nod, until he remembered he was on the phone. âYeah. She said you told her you knew I was a... a guy?â
âYeah. Just you, though I think she's a bit suspicious about a few of her less convincing past escapes now. I didn't want her to freak out if you did call me, or came over or something.â
âA bit presumptuous, aren't we?â CJ asked with a laugh, drawing one from Mike as well.
âWhat can I say? I had high hopes. So, did you wanna do something this afternoon? It's my last chance before heading back to campus tomorrow morning.â
CJ was torn. On the one hand, Mike was a guy. More to the point, Mike was a guy whose previous experience with CJ had been seeing him in a skirt and makeup. And he had liked seeing CJ that way too. On the other hand... there was no way CJ could deny he found Mike attractive. He had enjoyed going out with him, the way they had talked, the way he had looked at him. It had made him feel really special, and that was something CJ wasn't used to at all.
âI don't knowâ¦.â
âNothing big, nowhere fancy. Just a run to McDonald's or something, and maybe â what?â Mike stopped when he heard CJ start giggling.
âNo McDonald's, Jenna brought it this morning!â
âHah, alright then. How about, no. Just a sec.â The line went silent for over a minute, and CJ was just about to hang up assuming Mike wasn't coming back when the line beeped. âBack, sorry. I've got it sorted, but it's a surprise, okay?â
âA surprise?â
âYeah. I think you'll like it, though. Well, I hope you'll like itâ¦.â
CJ found himself smiling at Mike's nervous chatter, until another issue brought itself to the forefront of his mind. âMike, I don't have anything to wear.â
âWhat?â
âI mean, I'm... Mike, I'm a guy!â
âSo?â Mike's response caused CJ to stop a pacing he hadn't even realized he'd begun. âI know you're a guy. I knew when I took you out yesterday. It doesn't bother me if it doesn't bother you.â
Did it bother him? He had enjoyed himself immensely on Friday, and though the clothes had been a constant reminder to him of what had happened earlier in the day, had they really made a difference to how he reacted?
Mike had let him know quickly that he knew he was a guy, so not really.
But how would others react to seeing them?
CJ had always blended into the background.
