18. Nikaius and Morrigan

Corinth Manor

Nikaius had never seen an ice golem in real life, and he hadn’t expected to see it when he turned to tell Morrigan to leave. When he had entered the bathroom after she cried out for him, he had sensed the magic, and tasted its wrongness on his tongue, but hadn’t anticipated seeing that.

He had wanted to tell Morrigan to leave, but before either of them could do anything, she had been snatched up by the thing. He reached through the bond to seek out Waric’s signature and pulled as hard as he could once he found it, but Waric didn’t come.

The fact that this thing had somehow sealed off the room without his knowledge was astounding. Ice golems were large, animated ice creatures. Usually, they were chaotic and clumsy and easy to spot because of their snowy appearance; however, this one was uncharacteristically clear, and he then realized why they had missed it when they first entered. He could see completely through it and when he shifted, it became almost invisible. It looked as if Morrigan was being suspended by nothing.

He had so many questions, the biggest one being how this thing even existed. He didn’t know of anyone who could create something so well-crafted and sneak it past the manor’s wards.

A thought dawned on him then as he tried to figure out the best way to approach the situation. If it was so well crafted out of magic, the usual plan of attack wouldn’t work.

Priamos grumbled from deep within and this time, Nikaius gladly stepped aside to let him take over.

Being aware while also not in control of one’s body was weird, but at the same time, it was needed, especially in this situation.

He didn’t like how long it took Priamos to work out a plan. Priamos was the statistician between the two of them. Their primal instincts should have blended, but the Fates had always had different plans for them. The ability to split had saved his ass sometimes, like now, but he was more concerned with the thing in front of them and how they were going to save Morrigan than anything else.

After a moment of assessment, something tickled in the back of his mind and Priamos faded away, allowing Nikaius awareness again. Waric hadn’t picked up his call, but someone had realized they were missing.

“Morrigan, look at me. It’s going to be fine. You’re going to be fine, okay? Trust me.” Something deep within him settled when she nodded. His senses had been particularly attuned to her before, but now he could almost hear how quickly her heart was beating in her chest.

Priamos grumbled in the back of his head and Nikaius nodded, moving to step to the side. The large creature followed them with his head. As crystalline as it was, he couldn’t tell if there were any eyes in its head or not, but it shuffled along as he moved.

Morrigan whimpered as it shifted its hold on her, moving to swipe at Nikaius with one massive hand.
