Chapter Twelve

Dean met Dad and me on the garden path before we reached the front door. He had his hands deep in his pockets and his shoulders high around his neck. “How was it?”

Relief filled me at being back in his presence. Rayni did a good job, but she had been getting really tired by the end and the final part of the car ride had been rough. I wanted to hug Dean and soak all of him into me. “It was good. Exhausting. Lots to share.”

I waved back at the black SUV as Ash and Rayni were driven away, then we all went into the house.

Mom had the same question for Dad and I as Dean did, and I replied the same way.

“Sounds like your normal reply for every time I ask how your day was. Good. Not like you were just getting a tour of a clandestine society for superhumans or anything.” She crossed her arms and pouted.

Dad chuckled. “Your mom’s just jealous I got to go with you and she didn’t. I’ll tell you all about it, hon.”

The two of them headed off into the kitchen with Dad giving Mom a full recap, leaving Dean and I alone. We sat in the living room, and I pulled a fluffy mohair throw blanket over myself, needing the comfort. I put the TV on a random cartoon channel for some cover sound, then gave Dean my own recap.

“They want you to go and see Emma?” Dean’s pitch was a few tones too high.

“Shh! They asked me while Dad was out of the room. My parents don’t know about that bit at all.”

“And that’s not a red flag to you? Don’t you think you should tell them?”

“I won’t have to, because I’m not going to do it anyway.” I shook my head, the silky fibers of the blanket tickling my chin. “I’ve been thinking it through, and why should Emma get a chance join the Limbus team too, like we’re all best buds? She had plenty of chances to do the right thing—at the bank, at the park, and probably a million times before that. She’s a selfish fake and doesn’t care about anyone, so I figure she can just keep on fending for herself.”

Dean nodded slowly. “Could also be dangerous, seeing her again. Sounds like the best idea to not. But what are you going to tell Limbus?”

“I’m going to lie to them,” I stated matter-of-factly. “I’m going to tell them that I did talk to Emma but that she refused to come in. That way, my job is done and I don’t have to worry about Emma. Two wins, as far as I see it.”

Dean tilted his head. “Couldn’t you just tell them you don’t want to do it? It’s not like you’re mission-ready yet or under their command. I’m sure they’d understand.”

“But that could just end up with them sending someone else to go get her. Emma could still be part of my team again, which would be great to avoid.
