Chapter Thirteen

Winifred had been walking for half an hour when the clouds started changing shape and color, signaling a storm was on its way. She was probably another few miles outside of town, and she was hopeful that it would just pass over. It began as a light sprinkling with the clouds moving rather quickly across the bright autumn sky, but it turned dark and angry quite unexpectedly. She now knew a bad storm was on the horizon. She could not afford to get sick. Not only did she not have a place to stay, but she also did not have the money for a doctor, or any time she would spend in recovery. Every penny to her name had to be spent carefully and thoughtfully until she found a new post.

She quickened her stride but knew her efforts would be in vain. The rain was picking up, and the storm was gaining momentum as the light drizzle quickly turned into a torrential downpour. Winifred was no longer slightly inconvenienced but entirely soaked to the bone. Her teeth began to chatter, and her skin began to burn from the cold. The rain was beating down hard, and the wind was so ferocious that she couldn’t hear the carriage pull up beside her. Even more, she didn’t see the man reaching out from inside the carriage that pulled her inside.

“Hello, Ms. Otto,” came to her from a voice deep within the carriage. Winifred felt as though she knew the voice but couldn’t place how or from where. She didn’t believe it mattered that much, at least she was out of the rain, and too busy trying to get her bearings after being forcefully hauled into a carriage.

“Bbbb…..blanket….” It was all she could muster through her clenched jaw and chattering teeth. Her anxiety was rising, and she felt more unsure of this predicament she found herself in.

The voice boomed once again. “Get her a blanket, you imbecile.” She was once again grabbed without her permission, assumingly by the same man who had pulled her into the carriage. A short and slightly plump man wrapped a blanket around her quickly, and without any precaution for what part of her he touched, he picked her up and sat her on a bench. Moments later, she heard the same man shuffling underneath her feet, but she was too tired to fight it, too tired to care. All she knew at this moment was that she was being sheltered from the storm and feeling less chilled, thanks to the blanket, which was followed by a sudden warmth by her toes. The man had been fiddling with the placement of a warm brick. Winifred gave silent thanks to the heavens above, but that joy would quickly vanish as the man sitting across from her removed his hood.

“No. It can not be,” she whispered barely loud enough for her own ears, but he heard her and responded.

“Hello, Vivienne. It has been some time since we last met.”

“How…this…no … it’s not possible.
