Professor Cao sat in an interrogation room, facing a large mirror he had convinced himself was one of those two-way jobs with someone on the other side watching his every move. He had been here all night, and had slept for much of it, after it was clear he wasn’t a priority. He now sat starving, thirsty, and with a full bladder, struggling to appear as calm and innocent as possible, yet every fidget had his pulse racing harder. Yan had asked him questions for perhaps an hour, the interrogator becoming increasingly agitated. He told him everything, everything he could possibly want to know, even volunteering information. The only thing he had kept to himself was the secret text message he had sent, and so far, Yan appeared to have no knowledge of it.

He had told him about the dig. He had told him how he had met Acton years ago. He had told him everything he knew about his guests, why they had asked to be on the dig, who Dean Milton was and why they had been added to the team roster at the last minute. He told him everything, for in reality, beyond the text message, he had nothing to hide. He had done nothing wrong, and if this international incident hadn’t occurred, their visit would have been uneventful, and none of this would be happening. Yet despite all that, he was desperate to know why they appeared to be after his friend specifically, though he dared not ask.

That was the state’s business, not his.

The door was flung open and he flinched, nearly wetting his pants. Yan stepped back in the room, a satisfied smile on his face as he held up some papers. “You said Dean Gregory Milton contacted you to have Professors Acton and Palmer added to your team?”

“Yes.”

“And you spoke with him?”

“I did. Also, there were several emails exchanged.”

“And when was the last time you spoke to him or communicated with him in any way?”

Cao’s chest tightened as he was about to tell his first lie. “I guess it would have been yesterday or rather the day before yesterday. I’m not really sure what time it is. You took my watch when we arrived.”

“And what was the nature of your conversation?”

“Merely confirming that I had registered them as part of the official team, and notified the proper authorities in Beijing.”

“And was that through a phone call or an email?”

“An email.”

“And what number do you have for Dean Milton?”

“I’m afraid I don’t know. It’s stored on my phone, however, which you have.”

“And does anyone else at your dig have his phone number?”

“Not that I’m aware of, except, of course, for Professors Acton and Palmer.”

Yan smiled smugly. “Then how do you explain that there was a text message sent by a foreign-registered cellphone at your dig site after I arrived?”

He was certain his cheeks paled, but he shook his head vigorously. “I have no idea.” He had to save himself. “Maybe Jim or Laura were still in the area.
