The Master Gardener called to the crowd again, and the children headed to the third maze. This was meant to be the hardest of the three mazes. It was also the oldest. It was hundreds of years older than the others. Some people said it was older than the palace. Some people said it was older even than Rivven.

It was the Dark Maze.

Like the Green Maze, it was made from greenery. But instead of hedges forming neat, trim walls, there were huge and ancient trees—powerful oaks, twisted yews, beech trees with long gnarled branches and clawing twigs. This maze was different from the others. There were no straight lines here; it grew its own way, and every year it was different.

“The Dark Maze,” uttered the Master Gardener, and the crowd went ooooh, and then laughed. The gardener grinned.
